I came across this story several weeks ago and have returned to it several times because of its power and pain.  I've been a ST fan since the series was originally on in the 60s and have read fan fiction (general and K/S) since the 70s so I feel I have a good handle on what's out there.

This is one of the best K/S stories I have ever read.  It is articulate, clear in its images, explicit in its content.  It is one of the most heartbreaking Trek stories I have ever read.  There is sometime a tendency to miss the character of these two men, but I don't think I've ever seen it better captured than in this story.  Spock is loyal. He is supportive of his friend, but he is vulnerable to Kirk's charms.  He knows his heart, even if Kirk doesn't.  Kirk will always want to be the captain, will always want to be in charge.  It's who he is, and even though he would never hurt Spock he is not beyond using him for his comfort.  Neither of them are at fault, and both of them are.  It's just who they are, and my heart breaks for them.

My congratulations to you on this fine piece of writing.  I will continue to return to this story for a long time.

I won't let myself read all of your stories at the same time although it has been a great temptation.  One by one I pick one out and spend some time with the boys as you and I believe them to be.  Lovely, lovely story telling.  Lush, vibrant descriptions that allow me to see the places you describe.  Painful, angsty stories.  It is so hard for them try to resist one another, but they can no more do it than the moon can resist the pull of its planet.  I know that this was written some time ago, but your work has lost none of its value over time.  Thank you for a very enjoyable afternoon.  I was feeling blue and now I feel all better.

Author's Response:

This is very belated—I've had trouble getting notifications from my own archive for a while. Sad, I know! I just wanted to say thank you for leaving this lovely comment, and for reading the story. So much appreciated. :)

What a lovely, gentle story!  This is an angle I haven't seen pursued before.  I love the layers, the child that appears to be Jim's but is actually Spock's, the comfort Uhura could give Spock.  I will return to this story again.  Thank you.

This is a nice, quiet story, one that may not garner a lot of attention although it is deserved.  I like that Spock can demonstrate his caring without necessarily being able to articulate yet his feelings, and I like the juxtaposition of ancient Egypt with this futuristic story.  Well done.

I have read this story several times now.  It is excruciatingly painful to do so, but I can't help it.  I've always been a Spockie and do like a bit of angst, but this is very difficult.  That said, I really like this story and will continue to torture myself with it (which has got to say something about myself but I'm not sure what).  I'm going to see what else you've read.  Maybe there's that happy ending somewhere.

I realized as I got into your story that I had read it before somewhere else, but that didn't stop me from reading it again.  I've read a lot of K/S over the years and this has always been a favorite of mine.  The thing that is unusual about it is that you don't resort to the happy ending, the easy way out.  There is always a chance that things don't work out well, and in this case you stick to your guns.  It is a very sad story but a strong one about loss, real loss, without the gentle miracle of fal-tor-pan.  I was glad to have Spock back in the third movie, but I think your story is more realistic.

I sat at a bedside like this almost 30 years ago and watched my dad die two weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.  Sometimes it doesn't work out.  You got this one right.
