With a hasty return to the new Vulcan home world, their relationship meets it’s defining moment.

Oh, I hoped this was the 5th chapter....

The great majority of readers on this site don't have accounts so they can't leave reviews, those of us who got an account because of a certain story, or two, long ago don't really use them anymore. The rest are quite lazy. So don't take the number of reviews to heart, and have some patience. Unless the story is on the top of most recent ones many will miss seeing it in the first place. There are a lot of great stories on this site that you only stumble on by accident, and they are really great but people couldn't find them.

Author's Response:

I've been around the Fanfiction scene a long time, and I know that people don't really review all that much so I was really willing to accept little to no reviews, the part that got me the most were my stars. It was really hard to see those 3 1/2 stars surrounded by all these other stories with 5 stars. With everyone being so nice, and helping to encourage me though I've started to write the real 5th chapter which is where all the action really starts so hopefully everyone is willing to put up with another break period between chapters so I can get it all worked together so it actually sounds good and not just me throwing the readers into some action.

So thank you for Reviewing, I know it probably doesn't seem like much, but since you did I've been feeling good enough to keep this story going and not call myself all sorts of dumb for trying to be a writer, fanfiction or otherwise.

Summary:

It’s a question of biology. Vulcan biology.

The problem with falling in love with a member of an insanely private species is that it just might take you the best part of a five year mission to work out that the feelings are requited. And then you might discover that he’s already decided that the two of you can never be together.

And what are you supposed to do if he won’t tell you why?

Written as a response to T'Lara’s ingenious challenge, which is noted when it shows up in-text. Huge thanks to my fantastic betas Frodolass, penguin_attie and miloowen for being, well, fantastic. Any mistakes that remain are all mine.

The more I read the more I wish I could strangle Sarek and Amanda to death. All of this damage and and all of it just because they couldn't have been bothered with giving their son a simple sex ed talk.
And it will be great if Kirk and Spock never get together but find out before Kirk dies that they had wasted all of their lives because of a misunderstanding.

And then Spock gets sucked in and stuck in Abrams Universe and only straight people exist there and nothing ever gets right again. Yay.

The Illusion of Something More by TDazz Rated: ADULT (NC-17) starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 202]
Summary:

Spock's years as a cadet were the worst of his life-- he spent those years homesick, lonely, uncertain if he had made the right decision, terrified that his father would never forgive his choices. The only bright spot came from an unlikely source-- a virtual companion who would tell him anything he wanted to hear for 75 credits an hour.

Jim was too young to be on his own. He was too young to have his own apartment, too young to hold down most jobs. Certainly too young to be selling his services in the sex industry, but no harm done. None of it was real. At least, not until a homesick Vulcan looking for companionship stumbled onto the channel.

What ensued was an addictive, steamy relationship where the lines between fantasy and reality were sometimes blurred beyond recognition. Some parts were painfully real, including the distance that separated them. There was no overcoming that.

At least, not until two weeks into the Enterprise's first five-year mission, Captain Kirk recognizes his First Officer as the client he had fallen in love with when he was just a rebellious teenager. Then it was just an illusion, but now it could be something more.

Summary:

Now Complete!!!!

This is an answer to Monster Eater's Mpreg + Amok Time and Journey to Babel challenge:

It has occurred to me that after Amok Time, Amanda and Sarek were probably informed about that Spock‘s bond to T’Pring was broken. What they don’t know was that Spock’s Pon Farr was still lurking at the surface and was not over.

Spock chose to mate/bond with Jim and during Pon Farr, Jim gets pregnant (I’m thinking that there is some kind of device or something in the future that allows men to carry children. The reason got it was because it could only be implanted until a certain age and Jim was thinking towards the future aka if he never found someone to marry, man or woman, then he could get a sperm donor and still have a kid.)

Cue Journey to Babel when Amanda and Sarek arrive on board along with another guest. Sarek has chosen Spock a more compatible mate than T‘Pring and they brought him/her along to start to bond with Spock.

Bonuses:

- Spock refuses to tell his parents that they are going to be grandparents/Jim’s baby is his because of the strained relationship with Sarek (Spock figures that he hasn‘t talked to them in 18 (?) years and that probably won't change because of a child) . He also doesn’t want his child to feel like s/he needs to purge themselves of emotion to get his acceptance/love.

- Jim gets hurt (in the episode he gets stabbed). Spock, of course, is worried/freaks out in his own Vulcan way. Maybe he relieves himself of command because he’s emotionally compromised OR McCoy tricks him by saying that Jim is in labor and Spock needs to get to Sick Bay ASAP.

I haven't done a TOS piece in awhile; it's time. Besides, maybe I can work in the Trouble with Tribbles and I, Mudd!

This time, Jim's not in love with Spock--not now, anyway. So away we go...

I'm not pulling a magical anything--and this baby is part-Vulcan. I don't know if human babies can form thoughts or not, but I'm guessing they can. A part-Vulcan baby can just transmit those thoughts. And as far as complex emoitons go, I'm not a doctor or a scientist, but most babies I've been around seem to be able to express their feelings.

@unseensorrows- "Spock and Kirk shippers tend to ignore the whole problem with them being straight ....."

Nope, we actually don't really know if they are straight.
Spock only shows interest in women when forced into it, we can't even be sure he's not asexual outside of PF in the first place :). Kirk engages in cross-species sex, says "that creature called woman" is best for physical satisfaction, is all for celebrating love in all its Earthly forms. By his acting in canon Kirk could be a homoromantic bi/pansexual - sexually attracted to all attractive people, but forming deep relationships with other men - given that Spock is the only person he managed a significant level of connection with, which is far beyond any connection with any woman he had (or a person, in general). Plus there is Gene (who openly pushed for LGBTQ in ST from the very beginning mind you) saying they are close enough for physical relationship if the Greek ideal (friend/brother/lover)is the accepted style of that century. Also - that same ideal - f/b/l in Vulcan is the word Spock uses to describe his relationship to Kirk.

That being said, I apologise for going off the topic here instead of writing a review (liked the story, a lot :)), I just can't resist when people are showed into a binary gay/straight system, completely ignoring the fluidity and diversity of human sexuality. Especially in cases like this, where there is an assumed heterosexuality based on nothing more than heteronormativity of our society, and despite all clues showing something else is a much more likely situation.

Author's Response:

Well, my fic is certainly brining on the discussions, hehe! Go for it! I'll join in ;). (and maybe this time code in paragraph breaks in HTML, because just hitting return did nothing last time, lol)

"who openly pushed for LGBTQ in ST from the very beginning mind you"

Really? I thought he said once that he was homophobic, but that he'd gotten out of that mind-set later and regretted not putting LGBT characters in Trek. So I think he was making up for that a bit with the novelisation of TMP and the hints he threw in there. I also believe he wanted LGBT folk in TNG, but was never able to do it before he died and then Berman took over and yeah, I don't think he'll ever get over his homophobia and only did the bare minimum to not get called out for his shitty attitudes.

Summary:

A reimagining of a scene from the TOS episode "Day of the Dove," that assumes the alien presence preying on the Enterprise crew subsisted not on violence but sexual arousal.

@ Ana " It implies he should (or all the Vulcans think he should) throw away a long-term relationship for one with someone else that may or may not be unrequited, and certainly hasn't been tested"

It always surprises me when people write Abrams Spock or Nuhura as people capable of having good quality or long-term relationships. Neither of them are relationship material kind of people, nor is their student/teacher arragment of sex for benefits something that can grow into an actual relationship or marriage.

Reviewer: Nejasna Signed
Date: 06/27/2012 Title: Chapter 1: Sudden Gravitational Collapse

@Ana - I understand there are places in the world where this sort of thing is ok and you won't get fired for having an affair with one of your students or for messing with their job placement or messing with them while they should be on their post doing their job - but this is Starfleet Academy and the Enterprise we are talking about, two specific people, not our parents or anybody else. Please, do not project.

And, no - with his history Abrams Spock wouldn't be a good bondmate to Kirk either, or anybody else ftm. He already cheated on his first wife T'Pring, with a student no less, as an academy instructor no less, as well as while he was the first officer. Who's to say he won't go down that road again? There are always people in lower positions who would follow Nuhura's example and put out for job benefits, after all it worked for her, didn't it? Who's to say that this time around he would turn them down? What would stop him? A sudden surge of professionality he doesn't have? Being linked to somebody - Abrams Spock doesn't care about that or else he wouldn't be with Nuhura.  What else?

This fic Nuhura is 100% right to cling on and manipulate, that is the only way their "relationship" can work - he would just take a walk to somebody else's bunk otherwise.

The movie Nuhura better make sure he is no more than a beer buddy with anybody else on the ship, take up all of his free time and make sure he has no women working under him. On the other hand, now that Kirk is a captain, she may want to move on instead. He might even put her on the command track, better than Spock just getting her on the Enterprise.

Kirk on the other hand is better off staying away from both of them and quite frankly finding a new first officer who won't be picking ship crew based on them being involved and pressuring for it, and won't be randomly disappearing in the middle of a battle to save a planet just because he got a booty call.

Reviewer: Nejasna Signed

Yes, S/NU is one big mess. Not only did the movie show that they did consume their affair while being student/techer, they also did so while they were supposed to be doing their separate duties on the Enterprise and ignoring the emergency. She even ignored sending the evacuation order to Vulcan to get up and leave her post for a make out session.

Not to mention that the only proof Nuhura has of being qualified for the Enterprise is Spock's own opinion. Out of all of the academy instructors the only one to wouch for her is the same one already breaking the rules and abusing his position as an academy instructor in order to have an affair with her.

The same one it is show she can manipulate into more rule breaking in her favor.

When he was faced with the break it off or put them on different ships, which is not "being considerate" but being professional given that they are already having an illict affair, he is again manipulated into forgetting his role as an Starfleet officer and an academy instructor.

Quite franly I don't understand how any Abrams universe fic can be written, no matter what pairing, that completly ignores the disciplinary measures Spock and Nuhura would face for their behaviour, not to mention what went down on the Enterprise. Also, even if nobody else reported them, the idea that Spock himself would not turn himself in goes against everything he is as a person.

But that's Abrams & Abrams Trekkies for you.

Aw, this is going to be a complicated one, you sure up to 5 chapters is going to be enough? :D

The whole matter is more complicated than just - they did/didn't have sex, Nuhura has to prove she is qualified to be on the Enterprise too because it was Spock who gave her the grades she mentions as a proof in the movie. If the academy instructor behind her promotion is under her influence that puts her whole academy career under question.

Not to mention the misconduct on the Enterprise later on. It is a serious breech of protocol to leave your post during your working hours for a make out session    with anybody let alone Spock who is her superior - especially during a situation like the one in the movie, both when she failed to send the evacuation order to Vulcan which means people may have diead because of her, as well as the simply not being there at her post when needed/fraternising instead.

That alone can get them both thrown out of Starfleet for good, nevermind if they make it throught proving she earned her grades and the Enterprise posting (I imagine the log of Spock changing her posting still exists in the database).

And if they manage to prove she did earn her grades and her post on the Enterprise, there is still the issue of her and Spock fraternising while on the Enterprise - she/he will have to either swich to a different department/step down from being first officer or be transferred to a different ship.

Reviewer: Nejasna Signed

I must say, it is very strange the way they handle this issue in the movie - completly ignore the imposibillity of two of them being professional + still having a job + fraternising at the same time.

J.J. himself admited he never watched or liked ST but the other two who say they are fans ....  don't seem to know very much about anything either.

Gah, those Abrams uniforms don't even have rank stripes on them! Imagine that!

Like - who cares what rank you are, you counldn't possibly be somebody important, you are there just to be a girl eye-candy.

I know the Uhura actress of TOS tried to pass it off as a mini skirt movement/women libberation thing, but Gene ranting about Paramount forcing him to dumb down the show had the treatment of females included in it. His words show it was forced onto him and had nothing to do with what Uhura actress says.

In the original pilot the female uniforms were just as professional as male ones. But then we lose the female first officer and get her transformed into a clingy blonde nurse with a crush on Spock, and everybody loses their trousers. Though if you look carefully, some of the women in the background scenes of TOS still wear them (and a lot of them are in command gold <3) and the later ST canon explaines it as - some women chose to keep thair trousers, some like Uhura chose to go without them and both uniforms are accepted.

PS: as Nuhura's superior, Spock pulls more weight for his actions than Nuhura does, the consequences can only be either worse for Spock or equal for both of them.

When combined with Gene's quote where he says Kirk and Spock kept it platonic becuase it was "not the particular style of the century" it translates to either - they kept away from one another because of homophobia (sad face) or they kept away from one another because of there being a stigma surrounding either interspecies couples and/or captain and first officer couples.

Imagine being interspecies, homosexual and capt/fo at the same time. Nevermind the regulations allow it, it is still complicated.
