Mistletoe Challenge by Amanda Warrington Rated: ADULT (NC-17) starstarstarstarhalf-star [Reviews - 25]
Summary:

N.B. Despite the name, this is not a 'challenge' or humorous story.

In his final year, Spock briefly meets Kirk at the Academy Winter Ball. One day, many years later, the man who made a lasting impression on Spock assumes command of the Enterprise. Shamelessly romantic, this was written for the 2008 K/S Advent Calendar.

Voted best K/S story in the 2008 Golden Orgasm awards.

Haha! Oh the irony. To think right after I read your 'human pov' story from By Your Side. I stumble upon this particular one! and it's in Spock's POV! Yaaaaaaaay! :D

Love it.

I don't know if it was your intention or not, but this Spock (TOS) is more in touch with his human side as compared to the other one (XI). and it's simply endearing to read that. That Vulcan mind express emotions. Nice nice nice nice nice. Oh, and I'm really really glad nothing too horrible happened - what with Gary in the picture, you can never be too sure - so this one turned out very nice and positive, Was peeved off with Gary not allowing Spock to be the 'Officer of the Deck'. But it all turned out well in the end~

Happy :D

Author's Response:

Thank you for more lovely feedback!  I really love writing from Spock's POV as I find it interesting imagining how an alien would view humans while living in their world.

TOS Spock is 10 years older than reboot Spock at the start of the 5 year mission, and I believe that has given him more time to explore his human side.  I think, too, he has a clearer idea of what he wants from life.  I believe if Gary had lived, Kirk would not have been so predisposed to seeking out Spock's company and their legendary friendship may never have happened.

So glad you enjoyed this story - it's one of my favourites. :)

The heart has its own mind, and its business if Joy.

I really really loved it. It was such a lengthy read - and I enjoyed every single bit of it. The content was fullfilling. The quality was polished. The style was really clever. I love how you blended their two stories. The two eras. How each had an effect on the other.

And even though I know nothing of Bodie and Doyle, I have fallen for those two. So endearing! And so loving despite circumstances! And that Spock instead of Jim to be the one learning something most valuable from their encounter, just wow.

Thank you for the enjoyable read :)

Author's Response:

So glad you liked it! Cross-overs are always tricky, especially if the reader doesn't know both pairs. So, of course, I'm really psyched that you were so taken with Bodie and Doyle, who I love almost as much as Kirk and Spock. I'm especially pleased that you enjoyed how they helped bring about a change in Spock.

Thanks for reading and for your really lovely comments. They're really appreciated!

I love Spock's "recap" part~ they way he spells out the events that have unfolded (and the months and days and shift rotations) XD and the 'traumatic incidents' that brought them inevitably -literally- closer~

Heh :D Cute too! Shy spock when Jim wakes up~ Thou this was an ST XI kink prompt, it felt rather TOS at certain parts. Givin the whole a tasteful medley~

Author's Response:

I don't know why I didn't get a notification for your lovely comment and only saw it when someone else commented a couple of days ago. So apologies for not responding sooner.

This was my first 'reboot' story, having been in TOS fandom for 20 years, so you're absolutely spot on about it feeling rather TOS - I don't think I quite had the reboot characterisations down right when I wrote this. :)

So glad you enjoyed it - thank you for reading and for taking time to leave such a lovely comment! I really appreciate it. <3

You know I usually just read read read until I'm done reading the story, then I review. But gotta pause now.

Because. This chapter felt awesome on a subtle level. Like awesome sneak-attack. Like, I'm just reading, then suddenly the plan unfolds and it's like - WHOA MAN - that was good stuff man...

I loved, in particular, the conversation Jim had with Bones. Really really felt it, the way is was played out, and how it blended so nicely with the setting and plot. It was really , I don't know what you call it, a work of art? Literary art. I'm reminded once again what a plot genius you are! Thank you! Gotta love the good plots man, love them, they're rare you know.

Will be resuming, my enjoying read of your many chapters to come :D

I have LOADS of assumptions. (LikespockisgoingintoponfarrandmaybehewantstobeaGoladepttoo and thefreakingsparkbetweenhimandjimscreamsThyla!) but we'll see what the future holds~

Toddles~

Author's Response:

I'm sorry I didn't get around to responding to all your feedback until now.  Going through each one has made me smile.  Coming Home was my first (and so far, only) novel length story and I found it huge fun building in all the plot points and foreshadowing.  Your comment is extremely generous - it's left a big smile on my face. :-) Thank you! ♥

This Charalam is bugging me. Charalam sounds too much like Charlatan. And it's making me wonder if perhaps that near-pun is very intended.

What is this woman up to really. First with the coffee. then soaked wet on the same day Anderson nearly drowned to death. Sneaking to places she ought not be at. Then under a table. What next?

Author's Response:

Ah, Ensign Charalam.  A lot of readers had alarm bells going off about her.  Always in the wrong place at the wrong time... :-)

you know. I always knew you were the sort who did your research very diligently. Or that you were just plain intelligent.
but this whole Medical field is astounding me, and I studied sciences for quite some years too.
Just wow, at your ER terminology.
and explanations. Very eloquently phrased.

Of cause, it's always a plus when nobody dies in the end :)

And ofcause, Charalam is made hero for the day~

Author's Response:

I do do a lot of research as I'm a stickler for detail, and am also aware many people who read my work are qualified in medicine and sciences.  I'm so glad the medical terminology rings true - I remember doing a LOT of reading up about all this.  I am a qualified massage therapist, and had to do considerable studying in anatomy and physiology, so I already have a fairly strong grounding which helps me a lot! :-)  Thank you for this lovely feedback - it means a lot!

O-kay... I needed a sec, a few minutes actually. Just WHAT sort of TWIST was THAT?! Totally did NOT see it.
You've managed some sneaky twists in this one.
What with Charalam, and then with Spock Senior. I'm just bug-eyed and gaping. Sepak, there, watching?! Oh GOD... What?

Sneak attack like no other.
I read a story somewhere before where it ended with the two Spocks deciding to 'share' Jim.  But this one is on another plane, the mental plane... And Voyeurism!
Haha! Gosh gosh gosh, bloody socks man. ... -le still gaping-
Then you go name that baby Zachary.
Floored! I am floored! Though this has me floored in a way where I'm being floored on cloud nine! Like all that earlier wasn't enough?! Hah! Awesome man.
Followed soon after by Winona marrying Pike. I knew you were throwing them curveballs left right and center so I was ready when this one came! and baby Amanda. Imagine that! A 3/4 vulcan baby named Amanda. HAH! Bow down to matriach Amanda! I'd imagine it would be really hard to remain stern with a warm and gentle name like that ;D
The little bit about Sulu and Chekov didn't slip by me (ship em young I say!)

Anyway. Curve balls and sneak attacks aside.
This has been a very very pleasant read. It was very light, and overall delightful. And humorous! I still recall a few lines here and there - thank you Dr. Bones - that still has be muffling snickers.
It wasn't one of those more deeper and darker stories with complicated and troubling emotions running high.
Coming home felt just as the name suggests. Like you had a very long but enlightening journey, filled with good memories, the touch of trouble just amplifies your gratitude at the wonder and love you've experienced, then you reach back home and everything comes full circle. That sigh of contentment, and feeling complete.

This one is a chicken soup receipe. In plot and love and words for the soul.

Once again, thank you for this awesome literary filling meal :)

Author's Response:

I adored Spock Prime in the movie and couldn't leave him on his own, I just couldn't.  I had to find a fix, and there it was.  It had to be done. :-)

I think when I wrote this story on Livejournal, my notes included the observation that the Enterprise was turning into a love boat!  You're right, this is kind of candyfloss - I like light, upbeat stories and don't feel confident yet, as a writer, to try the darker, emotion-laden stuff yet.  I love the idea of this story being soothing, something to turn to when things aren't so good. :-)

Thank you SO much for leaving all your awesome, thought-provoking comments, showing me your thinking and reactions as you were reading - I really loved it and appreciate it. ♥

Arn't you gonna give a part where Jim TELLS Spock? That would be great man~ I wonder if you'd be able to insert (dry) humour in there xD

But Jim's cute, he's so damn cute here. :D

Thank you for fastwarding the STXI part of the movie. You know quite a few stories I've read re-writes that entier part and don't change much at all (why re-write it all when it's gonna be the same eh?) at least you sped through it and got the the good parts.

Speaking of good parts...

Math Genius! and getting caught by Spock! *sighs* lovely. The anticipation during those sneaky fill-in-answers parts were soo mouthwatering. Wonderful, delectable chunks of literary arranged in a beautiful platter.

You've managed to manuever your way out of the 'sticky' parts like past girlfriends and ex-wife quite well. I find myself not minding it at all. I do look forward to it thou, if you decide to adress that issue. Would prove interesting ,especially Spock's side of the explanation.

On that note, Kobayashi Maru went by smoothly too. It's just so slick this story (this chapter?) of yours! The flow's really smooth. but it's not plain. one would usually thing something so smooth flowing to be on the cliche-normal type'ed sort. But this one has that curry zang biting just oh so nicely.

Definately leaves you craving for more.

Onwards! Next chapter! :D

Scotty and Mom..... god. no. That would be ten million levels of weird.

I think she's cool. in this one. Again, you've done it. Simply, yet befitting. Most others usually spell Winona out as a rotten mom who couldn't get over her heartbreak. But this version does her a bit more justice. The Kick-ass mom that would've complimented the gallent George anyday. Definately better than someone who'd be totally defeated by heartbreak. Afterall, this is a mother figure we're speaking of. A mother of two sons - one of which gets more attention and 'importance'. ;)

Yay Winona!

You are really good with this whole character study thing you know.

in 10 simply parts, you've fleshed out Frank's life story in his personal point of view. You gave the 'default bad guy' character, a silver lining chance at redemption. You gave readers a second opinion on Frank.

I don't see him at such a bad guy now. Not anymore. More like one of those misunderstood people.

Yes yes, he is NOT all good, but he is not all bad either. And I LOVE it. love love love it. How you've written it in a way, that we see why Jim would have such a bad picture of Frank painted in his mind. And Winona's picture of Frank. and all that. and just wow man. Seriously...

Not just with Frank. But with Winona too (the previous chap). Just awesome man!

You give so much more life and depth to these characters that never got much mention in the movie! I am LOVING THAT!

THANK YOU! :D

I'd imagine if Older Spock wrote a bibliography, it would fill a section of that library.

Jocelyn doesn't seem all too bad now. She always felt liek such a horrible monster the way she's been written in many fics. and Bones feels like such a sad-case dad. But well, life is life and when you go out to space, that's it man. Your family is in the stars now, no longer are they the ones back on solid ground.

and it is hard, coz of the 'connection-feeling' thing, after all, his DNA is in that Jo kid.

Bones is the real lost boy out there in space yeah.

I mean, Jim has Spock, Scotty has the engines, Sulu and Checkov are as good as a team and everyone's mostly got someone. Chapel is a question mark, since it feels like they play the friends with benefits game only. So yeah, we found our real lost boy.

All's that left, will be his Bones~
