The Illusion of Something More by TDazz Rated: ADULT (NC-17) starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 204]
Summary:

Spock's years as a cadet were the worst of his life-- he spent those years homesick, lonely, uncertain if he had made the right decision, terrified that his father would never forgive his choices. The only bright spot came from an unlikely source-- a virtual companion who would tell him anything he wanted to hear for 75 credits an hour.

Jim was too young to be on his own. He was too young to have his own apartment, too young to hold down most jobs. Certainly too young to be selling his services in the sex industry, but no harm done. None of it was real. At least, not until a homesick Vulcan looking for companionship stumbled onto the channel.

What ensued was an addictive, steamy relationship where the lines between fantasy and reality were sometimes blurred beyond recognition. Some parts were painfully real, including the distance that separated them. There was no overcoming that.

At least, not until two weeks into the Enterprise's first five-year mission, Captain Kirk recognizes his First Officer as the client he had fallen in love with when he was just a rebellious teenager. Then it was just an illusion, but now it could be something more.

Communicator sex - whew, I needed a cold shower after that.  Now if we can just get them to do it in the same room!  Thanks for sharing!

I guess I've seen too many stalker movies and even though I know who it is, that just creeps me out!  If I was a very lonely Spock and I had someone pop up from my past like this, I'd be burning up the computer to find some way to trace the messages back to home.  But maybe that's what Jim wants - to be found.  It's still hypnotic and I can't tear my eyes away, please update soon!

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying. Hopefully I won't cross too far into creepyville for you!

If I were Spock and I was looking into Jim's alibi, I'd be just a little suspicious that he used a fictitious fuel report just like his stalker used to gain access into his computer.  Since he showed up at the rec room, maybe Spock's already figured it out and is just trying to see how far Jim will take it.  Now moving onto the past vr, that has got to be one of THE HOTTEST things I've ever read!  Please update soon!  (The rating may say a ten, but I think this chapter should get 2 points of extra credit for completely knocking my socks off :)

Author's Response: Thanks! Glowing praise indeed. I had to go back and reread to make sure (because I would have had to make some minor modifications...) but I don't think Spock was present for any of the fuel report ranting. Jim threw that little hissy fit for McCoy's benefit and was on about paper books by the time Spock showed up ;) Thanks for commenting!

Was Salit interested in Spock or just the emotions he could experience through him and is that why they didn't wind up being a permanent? Could getting a taste for the 'real thing' plus budget constraints put a crimp in Mortimer's extracurricular activities? I'm glad that Jim's experiencing a little jealousy over Spock and Nyota's relationship and I hope it's just enough for him to do something to give his feelings away. Also, now that Bones' curiosity is aroused, how long will it take him to wheedle the whole story out of Jim? The more we get into this, the more I'm loving it!

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying

I know I already submitted a review, but after reading some of the harsh criticism that's being aimed at Spock, I had to say something. Jim was an on-line prostitute (it's the only thing you can call someone who performs sex for money) not Spock's boyfriend and as such, you can't call Spock a selfish ass when taking advantage of what he's paid for. Also, when someone from another culture doesn't adhere to your cultural expectations, don't be surprised or shocked. Ok, I'll get off of my soap box now, sorry PD!

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm pleased that you saw a different angle.

My daughter had a similar problem in one of her graduate classes, but her partner intentionally slid to let his female (it apparently was a pattern) partners do all of the work and the instructors (knowing how he operated) suggested this was a good 'teamwork' learning experience. Loved this chapter and that Hudson and Mortimer were able to make up. That's why seeing Spock go to Uhura was so hard to take; but with her, I wonder if it's a need for the comfort of something familiar along with a little
'mothering' (disregarding the Oedipal connotations) with fringe benefits? I couldn't help a wince while thinking that it's a mistake with painful future written all over it! Thanks for sharing!

Author's Response: Teamwork is tough, but it's real. I know there are times right now as a grownup when I want to stick my finger to my colleagues for not holding up their end. I am a fiercely independent person, and I have had to really cultivate my attitude towards doing things 'for the good of the team'. I can see it from both sides. As for Spock and Uhura-- stay tuned for important information on that front ;-) Thanks for commenting!

Uh-oh, this sounds like a repeat ride on the misunderstanding express. Is this the final straw between Hudson and Mortimer? And I'm really hoping the Nyota thing stays within the realm of friendship (a very warm and affectionate friendship and that's where the fringe bene's stop). Thanks for the quick update and I hope that means you're feeling better.

Author's Response: I am feeling better, thanks. Ironically, feeling like crap for a few days meant I got a decent amount of writing done. I stayed home from work one day, left early a couple of days, and didn't feel like doing anything more strenuous than sitting at the computer and pounding out a couple of chapters. Thanks for the comment!

Nobody keeps a secret better than a Vulcan, unless it's you! I loved how Spock teased Jim with the fuel report and then had Mortimer use Hudson's real name of Jim. And the end was so poignant when you revealed how Spock found out - I loved every inch and I'll be so sad when it's over :(

Author's Response: *giggles madly* When everyone was speculating about when Spock would 'find out', I had the *hardest* time not spilling the beans ;) Thanks so much for the comments!

Summary:

This is in response to Rihala's Balance of Terror and Love Challenge. It goes like this::

ST: XI Abrams fic based on the TOS episode "Balance of Terror."

Spock is no stranger to being the unwilling subject of racism and xenophobia because of his childhood on Vulcan. So when a fellow crewmember begins flaunting his bigotry in increasingly violent encounters with the Commander, Spock intends to follow Starfleet protocol an resolve the conflict as professionally and quietly as possible. However, when he contacts the head of security, he finds that Chief Giotto shares the same xenphobic tendencies he trying to dissipate.

More details regarding the challenge can be found here: http://www.ksarchive.com/modules/challenges/challenges.php?chalid=216

Okay, so I hope this fits the bill. My first attempt at a multi-chaptered fic with an actual plot in YEARS! Please review, I love to hear what people think, it's very helpful when you're trying to improve your skills to hear feedback about what you're doing right or wrong. Thanks!

I thought Jim would notice right away, but you were more subtle than that, letting us think the damage was going to be missed and then the accidentally on purpose touching of the ear . . . hoo, boy!  You'd better have the ship's quartermaster check for any missing sheets, 'cause me thinks the Klan has expanded into space.  With the mystery creeps ability to hack into the ship's computer and the comment in the personal log, I think it might be someone that works with Spock in the science department, but that's just a wild guess.  I love who-done-its and I can't wait to find out and to also have some more ear tip fondling.  :)

Author's Response:

This villian does seem rather adept at the gadgets and found of using Spock's department items against him, no? I think it's less the whole Klan and more like the annoying ring leader that dressed in Red...weren't they called the grand wizard or something? I don't know, I hate the KKK and everything they stand for. Grr, but yes, this villian would probably be first in line to sign up if they were holding a recruitment ceremony.

Anyway, on a happier note, part of the challenge is basically to have an entire chapter or at least a large portion of it completely dedicated to fondling and you can bet the ears will get some loving. But that's not for a couple more chapters. Sadly. I'm itching to write the smexiness.

I don't think that our psychotic slug is Grand Wizard material, it's more likely that he's a minion with delusions of grandeur. How could anyone that rabid have gotten past the psych evals or does he have relatives in high places, like Admiral Komack, maybe? Please tell hubby that for the good of all, I'm issuing you a free pass on the housework until this fic is finished. :)

p.s. I feel really bad for Barry the Cupcake. Could you make sure he's in on the bust, please?

p.s.2 sorry about the many deletions, but I had a hard time putting this one where it belonged.  :)

Author's Response:

A free pass? No housework? BLASPHEMY!! LOL. But a sweet gesture, all the same.

PS--Don't worry, Cupcake is all over it with raspberry frosting and multicolored sprinkles!

PS 2--What deletions? I didn't even notice. :)

On a more serious note though, I'm really glad to see that you guys are sympathizing with Cupcake. I researched his character a little more because he's villianized so often and was happy with what I found. See, I knew thta in TOS Giotto was the bomb! He was all over the Horta and kept the miners from getting to Kirk and Spock so they could figure out what the poor Mama Horta was really all about.  BUT, what I didn't know was that he was also in on the take in several novelizations of the series, always doing badass security shit for the Captain and First Officer. I think he's a keeper. :D

Unless you're throwing out enough red herrings to open your own pickled fish franchise, I'm guessing it was Ensign M in the test zone with the mini torch.  I'm practically 'vibrating' in anticipation of the next chapter, but afterward we need to be thinking about the investigation.  A lot of times the detective overhears a conversation or someone innocently comments on something they've seen or heard giving our detective the clue to solve the case.  Wouldn't it be great if Marionette is Barry 'Cuppycake's' girlfriend; gossiping to him about what she overheard today and then bingo, bango, bongo a trap is set with Ensign dumb ass stepping right in the middle of it.  It was just a thought.  Now, I'll be just sitting over here waiting patiently on the smut.  :)

Author's Response:

Okay, you are not allowed to read my mind and post that shit in comments! Shame on you! Of course, there are some other plot mechanisms....damn it. Lol.

Sorry I was AWOL for a little bit, but RL can be a female dog, you know?  Anyhoo, what a tasty chapter and I know I'm being greedy, but I was hoping for a sex in the shower scene with all of that wet skinned groping and washing each other with bubbly soap; maybe next time.  Oh well, on to the next chapter and as always, thanks for sharing!

Author's Response:

Oh ho, don't you worry. I happen to love Charlaine Harris and I was just thinking the other day...in the shower, of course, that I really should put in a very descriptive shower scene for this story, lol.  Quite a few of you have requested more sex, so what can I say? I guess there's going to have to be at least one more fairly graphic sex scene before it's over.

I knew it! I knew Komack was involved, that pos! I hope the weasel finds his spine and admits to ignoring that psyche rec and not cover it up. I don't mind het sex sprinkled in with my slash, especially when it's good and it's with my new fave het couple, Barry Cuppycake and naughty and oh-so nice Marionette. I never really thought of Giotto that much, but you've made him into a very convincing white knight that I'm hoping will save our definitely not a damsel in distress Vulcan. Speaking of Vulcan, I was wondering if when Spock steeples his fingers, knowing how sensitive they are, is he deriving pleasure from their manipulation (kind of like telepathic masturbation?) and does Jim ever notice?

Author's Response:

I'm glad you liked the chapter and the dash of het.

As for Spock's hand steeple: I have theory. It is my understanding that the hands sensitivity have more to do with their  ties to Vulcan telepathy, than thier actual sesne of touch. My guess is that Vulcan sense of touch is probably enchanced when their hands are in contact with other senient being and that contact with their own hand/body and inanimate objects don't actually cause the same sensation. That's just my theory though. I honestly haven't done extensive reading into what the web has to offer on Vulcan telepathy and biology.

Oh man, you almost had me in tears with this one! I was hoping the cavalry (namely Jim and Barry) would swoop in and stop the ignition just before it went off, nabbing Matthews in the process. And Spock's beautiful hands . . . especially after what I said about them in my last comment. Kudos for your volunteer work, but as soon as you can squeak it in, please update and don't keep us hanging too long! *begging puppy dog eyes*

Author's Response:

It's always darkest just before dawn. Don't worry, Giotto and Jim are on the case. Anyway, I love being a volunteer, but OMG it's been f'n crazy this week and I'm just looking forward to the end of Saturday. I'm going to be dealing with confusion and disappointment from hormone laden middle schoolers ALL DAY. God, someone get me a drink...

The fact of the matter is that after Saturday, I'm going to need to write just to regain some type of sanity. You know how they say misery is great inspiration---it's not a lie.

Awww, Jim kissed Spock's fingers and made them better.  Loved your Bones and Nyota getting 'it on' on the desk.  I think McCoy's crotchitiness is how he deals with the bitterness from his divorce and the lonliness is because he was hurt (also from the divorce) so badly that he doesn't think anyone of worth will find him attractive.  Thankfully your Uhura took the proverbial bull by the horns and made the decision for him.  He seems to like a strong and in-charge (bet he lets her tie him up) kind of woman.  I vote for letting the crazy slime ball live so that you can do everything you've threatened, but also so he can spill the beans about the name of his protector.  I'm really amped over the promised shower scene with hopefully lots of nibbling of ear tips and healed fingers by a very grateful and amorous captain.  I'm so torn about the next chapter - eagely awaiting, but hating to see the end.  Hope you have a good day tomorrow!

Author's Response:

I've always thought his gruffness was very much attributed to his divorce and the bitterness he feels at being forced into space and away from his daughter due to his post-divorce financial situation. I think Bones' issues are less self-esteem and more to do with trusting another on an intimate level. My Nyota is taking the option of choice away and I think McCoy has found that he possesses neither the strenth of conviction nor the ability to deny Uhura anything.

Yes, another tally under 'don't kill the bastard, just maime then rehabilitate' got it. lol. As for naming Komack, I had hoped to make it clear in the story--which obviously I did not--that Matthes has no knowledge that his files were flagged, let alone that they were pushed through by anyone. He couldn't name Komach if he wanted to.

Alright, I'll forgive you for letting Spock show mercy to 'Ted the schmedd' by giving him a guilt epiphany via mindmeld. But that's only because of the promised 'steamy' shower scene. You know . . . the one with all of the ear tip nuzzling and finger sucking that you alluded to previously and that I'm waiting patiently (if you believe that one, then I deserve an Oscar) for. ;)

Author's Response:

Lol, yes, I know. I'm actually working on that shower scene right now. Today was my daughter's birthday and unfortunately, due to car issues, I had to drive hubby to work and she had to miss school, so I wasn't able to get ANY writing done today during the morning hours--which is when I do most of my writing. I knew it was going to be crazy busy because of the birthday, but holy hell. Did not need the car drama on top of it.
