Thank you for this beautifully constructed story and its companion piece, Passages. The voices of the aging Kirk and Spock are written exactly as I’ve always imagined them, and the character of R’Kal is a revelation - she’s a refreshing change from the stereotypical haughty, austere Vulcan female I'm so used to seeing.

A TOS story of this quality is a rarity these days and I hope you’ll be posting new fiction in the near future.

Thank you for posting this amazing novel on the K/S Archive.  I usually gravitate towards stories set in the TOS universe, but the voices of the nu! characters in LNSB were pitch-perfect and I was completely immersed in the story from beginning to end.  I thought it was brilliant the way you juxtaposed Spock and Jim Kirk and finally gave Spock his chance to shine in command (long overdue!), and Jim’s sense of humour was spot on – clever and laugh out loud funny.  I’m also a big McCoy fan so it was nice to see him play such an integral role.

And here I am one day after finishing the epilogue, still ruminating over the mysterious Eli and his hazel eyes and craving one more chapter.  LNSB was a great ride and I hope another K/S story is in the works.

Thank you for posting this wonderful story.  The entire series is riveting and every instalment just gets better and better.  Chapter 3 of The Fierceness of a Storm was particularly heart-rending and a real emotional roller coaster - lucky I had a box of tissues close by.

I can’t wait for part four of the series to see if the relationship suffers a relapse now that Jim Kirk is back on the Enterprise.

Thank you for posting this beautifully crafted story. It was interesting to see how you were able to incorporate those subtle facial expressions and nuances from the TV episode into your storyline, and the tone of the major characters was pitch-perfect.  It was a joy following along with Spock’s introspective and insightful thought processes as he tries to solve the puzzle that is James Kirk.

The prequel Where No Man Has Gone Before was equally riveting and I’ve added Always Shall Be to my list of favourite series just on the strength of these two stories.  You are an amazing talent and I can’t wait for the next instalment - although I might be tempted to take a pass if you choose Spock’s Brain ;-).

Author's Response:

And thank you for taking the time to post such a lovely review! Oh, the facial expressions and nuances are a slash-writer's dream. God bless Nimoy and Shatner - they give us so much to work with. Thanks so much for adding Always Shall Be to your favs! I'm afraid we'll come to Spock's Brain in the fullness of time, though there's a whole slash-mountain to climb on the way, and I'll admit to a bit of a soft spot for it... It's such a wonderfully cracktastic piece of slash heaven that I can't help kind of loving it. But I'll try and dazzle you with slash in the meantime so that I don't lose such a kind reader when we get to that episode!

Thanks again for this review - it made my day!

Worlds Apart by M E Carter Rated: ADULT (NC-17) starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 41]

AU. Albion IV was colonized years ago by Humans and Vulcans who rejected technology. Additionally, the Vulcans rejected the teachings of Surak. Kirk, the young son of a Human landowner, meets Spock, one of the impoverished Vulcans who work the land nearby and discovers a friend and more in the quiet young alien. But Kirk’s hopes and plans for their future must deal with mutual prejudice – and the secret Spock has been keeping for years: his uncle’s ongoing sexual abuse.

What a truly amazing story. I have to admit to some trepidation when I read the subject warning, but I was completely immersed in the world of Albion IV by the end of the first chapter and quickly devoured the entire story.  This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “roller coaster of emotions”.

I’ve been a K/S fan for over a decade but somehow managed to miss the entire fanzine phenomenon so I’m eternally grateful that you posted Worlds Apart here in the K/S Archive.  Please tell me there’s more where that came from.

Author's Response: Thanks for your lovely comments. After getting such a warm reception for the novel, I may think about putting some other stories into the archive. I never have been a prolific writer, but did have a handful of stories in zines...way back when!

Another great addition to your Always Shall Be series.  I'd forgotten how funny that conversation on the bridge between Spock and Uhura was.  Kudos to both you and George Clayton Johnson.

When you alluded back to the events of the The Enemy Within in this instalment, I thought it was interesting that Kirk still seems most confused by the behaviour of his "good" side as he "stripped half-naked and waltzed across his quarters at a Vulcan", and not the blatant lust of the wolf.

I also loved your line about how Kirk relies on McCoy "to be the ship's conscience, and it's not helpful when the ship's conscience takes an emotional vacation in the middle of a mission."  That describes McCoy for me in a nutshell.

I can't wait for your take on The Naked Time.

Author's Response:

Thank you! I know - I *love* that scene on the bridge and I can't even take credit for it - that's all George Clayton Johnson, Leonard Nimoy and Nichelle Nichols magic!

My feeling is that the whole love story plays out like a romantic comedy (to borrow shamelessly from the producer of Star Trek XI): you take one step closer to the romantic leads working out what's going on, and then you go right ahead and frustrate the hell out of the audience by having them rationalize it all away again. I don't think Kirk's really in touch with how strongly he's attracted to Spock at this point, and Spock's just - well, Spock. They're both very good at finding ways of explaining to themselves why they've acted in a certain way, and I think that's kind of adorable. Right up to the point where I start yelling at the screen, "OH JUST KISS HIM, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!"

And I am *sooooooo* enjoying writing The Naked Time.

Thank you for this lovely (and thoughtful) review!

I hope you’ll be posting more TOS stories here in the near future.
