Summary: "Spock?" Kirk walked quickly over to the bathroom door and activated the door sensor.

The lights were dimmed, but Kirk could make out Spock, leaning over the sink with his hands on the counter and his head hung low. There was a beard suppresser lying on the floor. A soft rasping sound filled the air and Kirk realized it was the soundof Spock breathing.

Wow. I've overlooked this piece so many times, thinking it must be plotless bathroom fluff. I read it, now, because a friend recommended it. I didn't even care for it, initially, as I read it - still thinking it would be little more than fluff, but I'm glad I kept reading.

I hope you'll consider revising the summary, even if you just say "a worthy tale." I think you'll get more readers and reviews. Seems a shame to let it go unnoticed.

I've never praised a fic for being sweet and I usually avoid those which others characterize as such, but this was a bitter sweet tale and I applaud you for having the will power (or whatever it was, for you), not to tie it up as most writers would.

Guess I'll go read other fics you've written. Thank You!

Well done; but I'd be greatful to anyone who thinks s/he can clarify: Why was Kirk so unkind to Spock, initially? Is it simply that Spock's timing is bad - Kirk has someone to kill sooner rather than latter? I get the sense that I'm missing something that passed between them prior to the first 'scene,' but I don't know how I could have gleaned more from the story.

"The truth, of course, was that he was a dishearteningly familiar figure in the galaxy, embodying a simple lust for violence that cloaked itself in the guise of religious activism. He came in every color of the spectrum, preached every conceivable philosophy, spoke of nationhood and genocide as if they were inseparable from one another. He firebombed parades and kindergartens, murdered policemen from a passing car, left a never ending supply of widows and orphans in the world. And somehow convinced himself that, through it all, he was only doing god's will."

WOW! This is the most concise, luminous portrayal of "the terrorist" I've seen written anywhere. I am so impressed. I hope this is printed elsewhere - beyond fan fiction, where it is accessible to a wider audience.

Author's Response: Thanks so much, for both this review and the one for The Vigil. The above has only been printed here, and in the original print zine. I wouldn't even know where else to post it.

Just seems like it has such relevance in today's world, beyond our ST universe. You've obviously given the broader context some thought - I see it in "Misunderstandings," too. You might consider doing an op ed. for a national magazine or newspaper - just a thought. In any case, it was a welcome surprise in FF, and I generally enjoy your stories a great deal.

Thanks!

I can easily imagine the script writers opening the ST 2009 sequel just as Isolda opens this story. The author is so true to the characters of the new timeline, thoughtful in their conception and of the circumstances which bring them together - very well done! Many thanks!

I really appreciate that you keep K & S in character (discrete, professional, neither of them weepy or overtly vulnerable) even while expanding their characters beyond canon - making it believable that you have behind the scenes access. While I far prefer prose to poetry, you seem to twine together the two, at times, seamlessly. I'll likely read everything you write - to the detriment of my projects schedule!

Author's Response: I can't imagine what caused me to miss your very kind comments about my work. I particularly enjoyed what you wrote about characterization. It means a lot that you thought the guys were kept in character. That's always a danger when exceeding canon. Hope the other stories don't disappoint. Thanks for responding.

I rarely re-read a story, but a second reading of your works always reveals so much more to appreciate. I believe I've found and read TOS & 2009 stories from all of the best writers. You are the best of the best. That your stories don't turn up on rec lists is astounding and highlights disservice to all those you haven't reached. Perhaps you should post on LJ, if you haven't done so.

I could go on forever and never properly credit your skill. Your characters are more thoroughly developed, dimensional, and believably flawed than those of the most accomplished authors. I come away feeling like I know these guys on a level that should be reachable only through a mind meld. Your balancing act with Kirk's character is amazing: another pinch of selfishness and ego and he'd be a narcissistic personality beyond reach of my empathy and hope for redemption. But you manage to make me embrace this complex, selfish, self-aware, loving, struggling man hopefully--but without sympathy (what a fine balance).

I'm a Spock fan; never charmed by Kirk's lusty ego: and yet, here, you draw him at his worst and most real and I like him better than in any other depiction--in story, series, or film.

Pleeeaaase; when can we expect a new story!?

Author's Response: Hello again, nothingcomestomind. Thank you again for your lovely comments. I'm so glad the story held up for you after a second reading. That compliment meant a lot to me. Lyrastar and Cantalenamara put my stories on the archive as I am hopeless about how to do this. I don't know how to post on LJ either, so it's not likely my work will appear there anytime soon, but thanks for thinking it's good enough for rec lists. I'm presently getting another story ready to appear on the archive. Hope that one will please you as well. Carolyn

This story is utterly amazing, in every imaginable way.  I usually notice technical errors in nearly every author's work. If even one was present here, I didn't notice or can't recall it. I was so consumed by the drama unfolding before me, I felt like something more substantial than a fly on the wall.  The atmosphere, characterizations, integrity... Amazing that you could uphold such respect for these characters that you could make K/S seem not only NOT OOC, for me, but virtually inevitable.

I also loved this story because it had the best mix I've perhaps ever come across of angst, hurt/comfort, and OPTIMISM!  Perfection!!!  You write so well, express your characters so beautifully, and concisely (I bet if I read the story again, I won't find a single superfluous word).

I've read tons of ST FF and I doubt a better story has ever been written.

Please, don't stop writing ST FF!

Author's Response: Wow! I'm so glad you enjoyed my story. As a teacher, I do try to make the writing as clean as possible, as we all do, I'm sure. Still mistakes do manage to creep in. Thanks for your lovely comments. It pleases me that I was able to convey some of what I feel for these two extraordinary characters.

While the explicit details of the sexual exploits were a bit much for me, I enjoyed many other aspects of your story. I especially appreciated the heart-rending depiction of elder Spock. It is quite likely he would feel exactly as you describe him. How disorienting to see the faces of beloved friends from a century past, and to find them both familiar and unknown. What it must feel like to harbor such feelings for them and to know that they are young, with so much ahead of them; while you are old, alone, out of time and place, a stranger to your friends and family. Agh. That's angst. I'll be up late, now, looking for a feel-good...

Well done. Thank you!

I think this is by far the best chapter. It has real substance - Kirk's not just being an imature little flake any longer. It's about real limitations and truth, now... And reading about your own schedule and limitations, I almost expected you to try to rush this story to conclusion. It will be hard to wait..., but of course, you must take the time you need for your other priorities.  All the best!

Will S/K turn to S/Mc? It'd be brave and would solve Spock's problem - Jim sacrificing his career for Spock. It's McCoy who has stood by Spock. Hmm... Wherever you're headed, hope you'll take us where no one's gone before.

You write well. Was I mistaken to surmise, from your bio., that English is not your first language? It's nice to see a variation on the usually exclusive K/S story- to have another character enter the scene -- although I don't go for the polyamorous tales, so I hope you'll use the label if that is your intent.

Unfortunately, I can't buy Kirk persuading others to collude on an impossible venture, while essentially keeping a captive onboard. Even once Kirk gives Christopher 'freedom,' the latter would have to be a kept man - no paycheck, no formal identity. Kirk can't captain the Enterprise while homeschooling an adult - and what would become of Christopher at mission's end? Kirk couldn't have given Christopher leeway to out himself with Star Fleet without terribly compromising Spock, who had supported Kirk's report to the Admiral. On the other hand, maybe Star Fleet would see fit to saddle Kirk with Christopher should Kirk have followed the proper protocol, after making his mistake, and fessed up to the error. Best of luck going forward with this one.

Author's Response:

Thank you for your comment. I am completely bilingual, having grown up both in Norway, and in the States. I suppose you might say English is my second language, as I was born in Norway.

I have to say that I really appreciate your honest opinions! I am always very happy to receive criticism.

My logic surrounding Kirk's decision to keep Christopher on board was that, for one thing, Kirk has a tendancy, throughout TOS, to go against Starfleet regulations and work for the cause rather than the organization. Kirk is feeling terribly guilty about Christopher's fate (as well he should), and he refuses to take the risk of Christopher's ending up a test case. As for the crew, they have followed him on much crazier stunts than this. The way I see it, there is a very special bond between Kirk and his crew (comparing to TNG, where protocol and propriety is much more central), and they will go much further for him than they would for any other captain. My best example would, of course, be "The Search for Spock". I can say, however, this is not one of those fics where things just work themselves out easily and, without giving too much away, I can promise you that Kirk's decision will have consequences in the future.

As for polyamory, this doesn't appeal to me either, so there will not be any of that in my fic.

Again, thanks very much for your review! I hope you continue to read and tell me what you think.

Thanks for the response; it's fun to hear from you.

I get your argument, but I think Kirk tends to encourage others to take a fragile limb only in matters of shared importance. Anyway, I do enjoy your writing and I will read the story when it's finished (if I can stay away from coming posts:-). Otherwise, I'll have to start from chapter one, again, after your summer break.

Thanks so much for sharing your talent. I really appreciate those who write and post - wish I had a similar talent for fiction.

Almost stopped reading - I think you needed to do more editing (wonder if you had someone proof...), but I'm glad I kept on..., And I hope you will, too. I usually avoid WIP b/c so many are never finished.

The S/U love scene in ch. 2 is the hottest thing I've read in a long time! Didn't know I could enjoy S/U so much, but I find your Uhura in character and likeable, so far.

A grammar check might pick-up some distracting little errors in number and tense.

Good job. Please keep it coming. Many thanks!

Haha! I'm actually relieved someone caught onto the grammar issues. It will go through some intense editing once I've finished the story. Right now I'm trying to spit it out so I don't get bored.
