I've read this story completely at least three times and some sections of it more often.  It's beautifully written with such sensitivity and depth of insight into the characters' psyches. Their lives evolve realistically and logically from the given circumstances not from a weak contrivance of plot. What a talent you have.

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you liked the story, as it has elicited very different responses over the years. But I'd always wanted to spackle the whole 'Spock goes to Gol' scenario, so this was my way of making sense of the senseless. Thanks so much for reading and for your most lovely comments. They're really appreciated.

Your analysis of how Spock maintains emotional control is very interesting.  I also think that  the Vulcan body temperature is lower than a human's.  That better explains why he wears thermal clothing beneath his uniform, his vulnerability to cold, and why the hellacious heat of Vulcan and his cabin don't even arouse a sweat. Thank you for this thought provoking story.

Author's Response:

Thanks for your review; I'm glad you found the story interesting and thought-provoking.  I think about TOS in general and Spock in particular ... more than is strictly sane. :-)  So I'm glad you enjoyed some of the results of that thinking.

Wow, this was a heart breaker.  I can see this happening in the Abrams universe, since that Spock is IMO not as emotionally mature.  TOS Spock would have said kaiidith( hope I spelled that right) and done what is logical.  He could have his cake ( though not the kind he wanted ie. kids with Kirk) and eaten it too (kids after Kirk in the second half of his life).  After all, he will outlive him.  That would be better since then he wouldn't be alone.  Also TOS friends would not have deserted Kirk.  In case I haven't made it clear, I really like your story.  It was well written and provocative, in a good way.  I also agree not everyone wants or needs to have kids.

Author's Response:

I agree, the Spock of TOS wouldn't have abandoned his Jim; neither would have Jim's crew.  I figured this story disregards STID and no one has really experienced what it would be like for Jim to die.

;)

I got that you liked the story.  Didn't even think otherwise.  It's meant to be a heartbreaker and very likely to cause people to take sideS.  I don't mind lively debate if no one is attempting to burn me at the stake.  in fact I thrive on people's challenges because it helps me be a better writer.

:D

Wow, this was so well written that it was upsetting.  Since reading it, I've been trying to come up with a scenario wherein Spock would survive.  Given Kirk's betrayal, the cold, the isolation, his inability to return home,  I don't know how he could or if he'd even want to. You put our boy in an impossible situation. Smh at that cold hearted Kirk.  I could wring his neck! Do you really see him as that selfish?  I wish you'd write another chapter and save Spock, even if it's the horrid deus ex machina.  However, I can't see how you can possibly redeem Kirk.  I repeat, so well written but a heartbreaker.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for your comments.  As I stated in another comment, just because Spock has disappeared from the perspective of the narrator does not necessarily mean that he has died.  As for your question about Kirk, I will say this:  He was clearly in love with Edith Keeler in the TOS episode, wasn't he?  Could he not have decided to take her instead of the lonely life that he had led? Would Spock not have insisted that the timeline be restored?  Couldn't they have quarreled over that?  Or it Spock had feelings for Jim could that have not loomed large in their parting?  There are many interpretations of what could have occurred as you have already realized, and I hope this little story keeps you thinking.  Thanks again!
