This just tore out my heart. And I sort of want to smack them both, dammit, because isn't it obvious they're perfect for another? Arrrgh! This is why I avoid fics between the 'lost years'. Tears me up everytime. This is by far one of the best, though - not just plain angst, because it really sells their connection, the intimacy, the trust and immediate, instinctual understanding they possess... I'll stop before this comment turns to rambling.

Off to cry now.

Author's Response:

I'm so sorry about the angst quotient—I was very young when I wrote this! Is that a good excuse? Thank you so much for reading it, and for taking the time to comment.

I can't properly articulate *why* but this remains one of my favorite fics, and I continue to think about it ALL THE TIME. I love Kirk's struggle to understand Vulcan culture, and Spock's internal struggle w/ the knowledge that he *knows* a human won't understand what he's doing, but... he has to do it anyway, and he can't explain, and. ugh.

All the writing here is lovely - I was struck by how well the religious zealots were portrayed, including the dissenting pilot.

Characters with strong loyalty are my weakness and I'm really intrigued to know what the blood-oath etc. would entail. I'd love to read more one day, but even if you never continue this fic I love rereading it anyway. Thanks for sharing

"Your missions are often high profile, and your solutions...unique". Bwaha. That's one way to put it. I love this. I like imagining sometimes how somewhat-more-sane people view the Enterprise missions, though this particular take has never occurred to me! Your sneaky journalists were hilarious, and, wow, were some of those missions twisted around. And some of them... weren't. Sleeping with slave-girls, indeed, Kirk. Really.

A very enjoyable read - thank you for sharing! :)

Oooh wow, I love this story. I adore how you're portraying the complicated nature of everyone's feelings - Spock and Kirk and Peter, all of them - and I'm reeeally not sure about Kirk's choice. Like I feel it could turn out well or there might be ~resentment~ and arguing and just no, ah.

Spock's experience seems very vivid and real, though. You've done a wonderful job, thank you for posting.

Thank you so much :-) Yes, I'm not sure how Spock's going to manage with Jim being so overprotective, but I'll try not to let anything too awful happen :-)

This is a lovely story, and all the characterizations are excellent. The descriptions of how Spock deals with his blindness seems very realistic, and I like the idea of using Vulcans as the enemy - not exactly the stereotypical saboteur. Thanks for sharing

I cannot even articulate how much I love this fic. I saw the summary and skipped over it a few times, thinking, 'oh, Spock's a priest, probably pure smut'. Which, there was still definitely some kinkiness to this, but not in such a bad way? And muuuuch more romantic than I'd thought to hope for. It was more realistic, too, that Spock didn't immediately take his usual place on the bridge, because that would have been a little ridiculous. And the Vulcan gods! The prayers! Agh. I'm favoriting this to reread it a thousand times more, thank you so much for writing it. :)

Author's Response:

heeey, thanks for the review :D

I'm so glad you gave the story a shot XD I'm very bad at pure PWP. most of the time even my PWP has some kind of plot, so... yeah *snort* great that you enjoy the realism :) I like fluff just like the next guy, but there simply are things I can't comfortably write without feeling like a stupid 10 year old, so there's that XD and a bit of realism makes it more romantic, when it's fluffy *thinks* aaah well ^.^ hope you'll still have fun with it the next 999 times you read it <3

Beginnings by CatalenaMara Rated: ADULT (NC-17) starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 6]
Summary:

An AU fic inspired by and extremely loosely based on the 1980s Harve Bennett proposal for a Star Trek movie titled “The Academy Years”. Kirk, in his plebe year, is embroiled in a tempestuous relationship with the volatile Janice Lester and otherwise is completely focused on the upcoming Axanar mission.  Upperclassman Finnegan is doing his best to make Kirk’s life hell. Kirk’s life is complicated enough. Then he meets the only Vulcan at the academy, a man he finds absolutely fascinating - and runs headlong into the one remaining prejudice on Earth - prejudice against aliens.

I love this! And it's interesting to see a fic based on that proposed-movie: when I heard about 'The Academy Years' it struck me as a much better idea than the 2009 AU. The individual characterization is great here, though McCoy and the Axanar situation was glazed over; but I suppose this is the KSarchive, yes? A very good read either way; great writing!

Hooooow do you do this? Typically, I have no shame at all with kinks. Anything goes with reading - except petplay. That is where I draw the line, because I usually find it sorta weird and disturbing - no offense to anyone else, I just don't want to read it.

But this! Agh! Hottest thing ever. You just do the psychological portion so amazingly well, and that makes everything else understandable and good instead of squeemish. I usually hate such a bottomKirk, too, but this fic. I can't even articulate it. Your writing is beautiful and I love it all. :)

Author's Response:

Heeeya, thanks for the review!

hnnngh I'm so glad you liked this! I feel you, really^^ I like so many kinks but it is the execution that matters. I read petplay stories where it was handled with just so much taste and eroticism and then there are ones where it doesn't do anything for me (when they put on fake paws for example). But everyone has their kinks so, hey, I'm not judging^^

I'm kind of bad at writing pure PWP. i always have the tendencie to explain why solethig is the way it is xD I have yet another kind-of petplay story called 'hooked' though I don't know if you'll enjoy that one ^^''

I adore this already! Kirk's distrust is great - you have to imagine there'd be some suspcion and awkwardness, after Spock steals the ship, and so it's interesting to see that explored. And Sybok! There's plenty of potential conflict with the idea of Spock's crazy half-brother, and it's a shame the Final Frontier was so, uh, horrible. I'm always looking for good Sybok inclusions, though, so I love this already. Can't wait to read more!
