I've been writing for years, but never thought to get involved with fan fic until the cursed blessing of ST:XI. In my innocent fan-girl web-wanderings I stumbled across Killa's "Surrender." I haven't been the same since. A big thank you to everyone here for your dedication to K/S!

Heads up, I'm a S.L.O.W. writer, and something of a perfectionist, but I always finish every story I start.

This was the first K/S story I ever read, and it literally rocked my world. It still rocks my world. Some of the moments from this story will live forever in my mind as the most vivid, most erotic and evocative moments not only of K/S, but of all the erotic literature I've read - published or not. Without such a great induction to the world of K/S, I don't know if I would have stuck around to see some of the truly amazing things that all of you can do! Thank you Killa!

Wow wow wowowowowow . . . okay, I need to slow down, I'm starting to stutter over my praise. You know how every now and then you read a story or a book that reminds you of why you loved reading to begin with? That story did this for me. THANK YOU! You dragged me along and didn't let me go until the very last word! I honestly can't find a single talking point to gush over because it's all so phenomenal. I can point out that I think your treatment of Kirk and Spock's telepathic link is one of my favorites. Your characters were spot on, and even the minor characters were round and entirely believable - no flat performances here. And your talent for plot quite simply rocks. The choices you made regarding POV and what to show us vs. what not to show us were really masterful. This story slapped me upside the head with awesome.

There's only one thing I don't understand. WHY ARE THERE NOT MORE REVIEWS AND READS FOR THIS GEM?

Author's Response:

Thanks so much for your encouraging feedback (both of you).

Re: reads.  It's not as bad as it looks.  Image was the first story I'd posted and when the site was changed to accommodate the new movie, all the old 'reads' were lost.  Can't recall the exact number but it was around 2,000.

Reviews: alas, it's always been difficult to get people to write them. Too bad because it is very discouraging to writers, to spend lots of time on a story and have it seemingly drop into a black hole.  One of the main reasons I stopped writing in the 90's - over this story, actually.

This story is wonderful! Impossible not to read it all in one sitting. Everything is in place here, not one single thing doesn't contribute in some way to the arch of the story. I love stories that play with destiny and fate, and you do so in a stellar way.

I particularly loved your treatment of the rape. I really got the sense that it wasn't something Spock DID to Kirk, so much as something that happened to both of them. That said, you did not flinch in portraying it as nothing less than a brutal sexual assault perpetrated by Spock - it was almost painful to read in places - nor did you gloss over the pain and terror Kirk went through afterwards. And without compromising any of this, I still believed it one-hundred percent when Kirk's feelings began to change. Nicely done!

What a mighty good man your Kirk is, too! Very human, yet somehow superhuman, as Spock points out when he says that most humans are not as open-minded. Most humans would also not be able to process and transcend their pain the way Kirk has done here, showing us exactly why he is an exceptional leader, someone to really look up to and follow, someone who knows all about the darkness in life - and in himself - yet is still a loving, bright spirit. I'd follow your Kirk into the outer reaches of space any day!

May I ask how long it took you to write this?

Author's Response: WOW! Thanks so much. I'm so glad you enjoyed my story. I also like stories that deal with fate and destiny and if I ever manage to post more stories of mine, you'll see that. The rape and the aftermath and then having Kirk's feelings change was difficult to make believable. I'm really pleased that according to you I managed it. Kirk to me is the quintessential hero and Kirk and Spock together is simply magic. Thank you for taking the time to comment in such depth. And to answer your question, unfortunately I'm a very slow writer. This story took me six months of blood and sweat.

I love your writing style. You say what you need to say, not long-winded but always eloquent, and your voice for Jim is one of my favorites. I liked that here Spock was the one protecting Jim's modesty, though usually it's portrayed as the other way around. It showed that Spock knows that Jim's not all his reputation paints him to be. You conveyed the different characters without needing to spend a lot of time painting pictures of them for us. You seem to trust that they will show us who they are without your help, and they do. It's a very good example of the writer getting out of the way of her own work. Nice job! Thanks for writing this, and keep it up!

Author's Response:

Thank you. Modest? I didn't think of that. I thought of it more as Spock was thinking 'I know you're afraid to believe what I'm offering, so I'm gonna stick it in front of your face until you have to grab it.' And the characters, well, our two speak for themselves. I fought about how to do Edan, but he turned out a kind-hearted Lestat, which was rather cool.

Wow! This is a seriously kick-ass piece of writing! I was hooked into the scene and believed every word of it from the get go. Jim's reactions to watching his crew members being tortured was great - feeling so horrified that he has to dissociate from them, yet not allowing himself to look away from their pain. But his scream in response to Spock's torture was just inspired! As was his reaction on waking up in sickbay and finding Spock gone. I also loved the little world they were in during Jim's torture, when they were lost in the meld and it was like this amorphous place with pain and memory and Jim and Spock and their friends and all the places they'd been. I really got a sense that they shared themselves very deeply during that experience, becoming one another's protectors on soul-deep levels.

Thank you for sharing this! I can't wait to read the sequel, but I have to say I might anyway, at least until the finished work is posted. It would be torture to be ripped away from writing like this because it's not finished.

Was that "torture" comment over the top?

Author's Response:

Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it. =D

The sequel is finished now, but I'm afraid you'll find it a much different story from this one. I chose to utilize a different tone and style, and to me, the sequel makes the dissociation of Boldun even more obvious. Still, I hope you like the sequel as much as you liked this one!

Wow! I'm on the edge of my seat here --- please, don't keep me waiting long!

I have to admit I was kinda annoyed with Jim for doing the whole "we have to get the bodies down from the meathooks" thing - I mean, come on, be a starship captain and get your ass and the ass of your first outta there! Although I totally see why it was done, and I don't think it should be changed at all, and I totally loved that you juxtaposed that with his brutal murder of the Nixaan leader (though I didn't love that he did that either - the two 'I-don't-love-this's together seem to make a 'love-it').

ALSO. Cheers for painting the Federation in a negative light. Not that I'm glad the Federation could be evil, but I think we as fans tend to be all lollipops and rainbows about it and forget sometimes that the Federation is in fact a government-type organization, and any such organization always has it's dark side (even the good ol' U.S. of A.), which is usually kept out of the awareness not only of the general public, but even of some of the more up-right people involved with the organization.

I think your own assessment of the writing was pretty on target when you said that you thought you might've gotten a little too lyrical in a place or two, but hey, ain't nobody takin' away your gold star or nothin'. Other than that, the work really flows. It doesn't get stuck on itself, it's not trying to be overly "writerly." You are just telling a story, and damn but you are telling it well.

And last but not least: AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! HOLY CRAP!!!! WHAT DID THEY DO TO JIM?????

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for the epic review! It means so much to me that you're not only reading my story, but you're actively reading it and thinking about it. There are no words :)

I'm glad you were able to put aside the annoyance with Jim and stick with it. It was a stretch for me too, which is why the whole "ensigns from meathooks" thing happened. I needed something horrible enough that it would push Jim into savagery, believably. At this point in his career, he's never had to deal with this kind of loss under his command and he's still so young. Combining that with a nightmare scene and a target I felt would be enough to let his inner monster out. I also may be a little bit twisted

I'm also glad you like the Evil!Federation! You're exactly right, it's a government organization, run by people - not posters - there has to be a seedy underbelly (and damn it, I'm going to find it!).

*grin* It's so hard to read back your own stuff critically, isn't it? Even the parts that were flowery and over the top kind of shaded out when I was reading it back because I was just too involved. I imagine, when I finally finish this thing, I will go back and heave a couple of heartfelt groans. Thanks for letting me keep my gold star despite that ;)

And last but not least: MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Thanks again!

I loved the way you opened it with the description of the wall, and the wall itself made me want to be part of the crew of the Enterprise just so I could experience it. The sex the first time Jim dominated Spock was so hot I needed a cold shower. That's always how I've thought their first time would pan out--Jim taking the lead and forcing Spock to the release he craved. I did think there was a lot of crying on Spock's part, especially toward the end of the story, but I get that it was about release and acceptance, and I see why you did it. Thanks for this story which will replay in my head for awhile and make my days at work more . . . fun. Let's say fun.

You write some of my favorite sex scenes! So raw and emotional. Naughty and wrong and deep and SO RIGHT all at the same time, they're DELICIOUS. You have this talent for making me cringe in the most yummy ways. Like Oh NOOO, not that! . . . umm, actually can I have some more? This piece is no exception. I especially love your treament of Spock and Kirk themselves. Nobody's helpless or hopeless here, or pining miserably away in unrequited affection. They're both confident and capable, and when they come together it's a meeting of equals. Even when one of them's wounded or being "debased." Heh heh.

I have to say I also really liked that the Galaans worst possible punishment was sexual debasement when that was pretty much Kirk's most secret erotic fantasy. I had a lot of other favorite moments here, not least when Spock smelled Kirk's arousal and Kirk absolutely knew, by just the flaring of his nostrils, that Spock was onto him. That was a really intense moment with a lot of emotional layers (hopes, fears, excitements, humiliations) and you conveyed all the emotions you needed to with just those simple actions. Brevity is the soul of your wit!

Please keep writing! You're awesome!

Author's Response:

You know, that has to be one of the longest reviews to one of my shortest stories!  I just want to thank you for taking the time to write all your thoughts down and sharing them with me - it gave me such a buzz to read! I loved the fact that you were cringing, but carried on reading - that is exactly the reaction I was hoping to get from readers.  This story popped into my head when reading the rec request and pretty much wrote itself in a couple of hours, which probably tells you all sorts of things about the state of my mind and what dark things lurk there!

Thank you for your kind and encouraging words -- I really appreciate it.  :-)

So I can't remember if this is the second or third night in a row I've sat transfixed before my computer, reading this thing. I can't remember how many hours I've sat here tonight, reading it. You're making me forget time!

I was initially uninterested in reading this, because of the size--what a monster! But I read the first chapter and was so taken with your style (you have an IMPECCABLE Spock-voice; it's just absolutely inspiringly PERFECT) that I just kept reading, and this thing is like fucking quicksand. It. Is. So. Awesome.

You are such a fantastic writer. Characters are spot on. Each chapter demonstrates such different, flexible styles. The "episode" plots you weave into the over-arching storyline are so compelling they could each be developed into full-scale stories. Even when you only do pages of dialogue and don't make dialogue attributions, it's clear who's speaking and what's happening. Great sense of timing, which means you can be hysterical, too.

And I love the way you are slowly developing the Kirk/Spock relationship. It's just like it would be if the series was rebooted incorporating the new actors/new timeline: for a long time Spock just really found Jim very frustrating, but you wove in hints of respect and friendship about to blossom. Now the friendship is there and they're joined at the hip, and you're weaving in the romantic leanings. Sometimes it's almost as if Spock himself is unaware of the romantic leanings, like when he noticed the light of the computer terminal on the angles and curves of Jim's face.

Reading this is so engrossing and encompassing, it feels like I'm actually living day to day on the Enterprise! This is wonderful and I can't wait to see where it goes next and what ends up happening! I usually wait until I'm completely finished reading a piece to comment, but I just had to drop by in the middle of this one and give you a big neon flashing APPLAUSE sign!

I thought the whole thing was pretty precious. It kind of made me want to adopt a Vulcan (and marry one, too, come to that!) I loved that Sonak didn't go down the whole "illogical!" route regarding Halloween, but that he took it so seriously that his research freaked Jim out a little. I also really liked that he had different titles for Jim and Spock. So awesome! Nice balance of sexiness with domesticity/parenting (that can be tricky). If I had any beef with it at all it would be that Jim and Sonak stayed out so late. I don't think people are even passing out candy that late? isn't that when the real freaks come out and the responsible parents go home? But that wasn't really an issue -- this was adorable!

Author's Response:

I’m glad you enjoyed it! ^_^ Adorable was the mark I was going for. And the domesticity balanced with the sexy times was all I could think about when I consider Kirk and Spock are married. I had fun interrupting Spock every time he wanted Kirk.

You’re right about the time frame. They were edging into late territory. I didn’t get into it about how a Vulcan’s bedtime would naturally be later (less sleep and all). Obviously bedtime doesn’t equal curfew, but Kirk was anticipating Sonak not being able to make it to midnight (10:30 was pretty close though). Personally, I keep my light on for as long as there are trick-or-treaters. I’m in a neighborhood that doesn’t get a lot of people, but around 10 o’clock is when the final few are finished. It was more about Kirk wanting to get to campus and show Spock Sonak’s outfit despite the later hour, rather than about letting Sonak stay out past curfew. But most importantly, it was also about me getting to write shameless fluff involving Kirk carrying Sonak. That was enjoyable. ^_^

Thank you

Hot hot hot! I think I need a cold shower after this one. Nice work with the tenses, too.

This was so wonderful! The pace was perfect, the natural progression of their friendship into romance. It felt perfectly natural. I love how you treat the characters -- not too immature, but not paragons of wisdom, either. Mostly confident, a little insecure, caring about each other. I especially liked seeing Kirk and Spock's evolution of communication after the link, and how they moved so easily into being bed partners, though they weren't preoccupied with sex yet. This piece made for a great evening read! I even forgot I was reading!

So I usually don't do fair tale adaptations or parodies, but this was so much fun, I found myself smiling at so many little aspects. I hereby declare you the master of double entendre and euphemism! I also loved all the references to the TOS show titles worked into the prose so naturally. "It would only take a few minutes to perform his errand of mercy and then he would be free to enjoy a naked time."? Awesomeness. So clever in so many ways . . .

Author's Response:

This was one of the few stories where Phaedra and I were actually physically writing together and we had a absolute ball. Phaedra had an amazing sense of humour and dry wit that always seemed to bring out the best in me. I'm so glad you enjoyed this story that has so many happy memories attached to it.
