This story and its sequel, Full Circle, changed my life and continue to be my all-time favorite stories. They are what I reach for when I have had a bad day - I call it a bit of Killa therapy and it works every time. I don't think I can ever find the words to adequately express my gratitude.

This story haunts me. I have read countless K/S stories over the years but very few have touched me as much as this one. I LOVE Spock in this story. Stripped of his clan, posessions and even Jim, he is so wonderfully vulnerable and yet, he is still very much Spock. One of the best scenes for me was when Spock was actually considering suicide after his meeting with Jim. That scene was so realistic and poignant that I find myself thinking of it very often. Thank you for this precious gift and I hope that you will post more of your stories to the archive.

Author's Response: Thanks much!! It pleases me to know it works the way it did in my head. One's never entirely certain...

My first thoughts upon starting to read this story were that I was so glad that someone has written this scenario because I always thought it was ripe for KS beginnings. After all, we have a Kirk who has lost his brother and has to deal with the possibility that his decision may have caused Spock's permanent blindness. Add to that the natural deduction that a blind Spock would not be able to serve on the Enterprise and you've got some pretty serious emotional turmoil for our poor captain to navigate. And we all know what happens when there is emotional turmoil, don't we? As I read the story, however, the paramount thought in my mind was how glad I was that it was this particular author who chose to write this story. The characters are very well portrayed and express the right amount of grief and despair without slipping into maudlin ramblings (not that I don't like maudlin ramblings from time to time). This story is an excellent piece of fiction and a credit to the KS archive.

Author's Response: Woo hoo hoo -- thankee sai! This has always been one of my favourite eps. So much h/c...

What a gem! I was hoping that you would post something for K/S day so I kept checking in. Fun characterization of McCoy. Love the scene where Spock had had enough of the foreplay and was ready to "initiate reciprocal episodes of intercourse". I am a big fan of your writing because of your great talent for setting the mood and the "right on" dialogue. You did not disappoint! How soon before we can get some more?

One of my favorite stories by this author. There's nothing like a third-party observer, especially when that observer happens to be an inanimate object. Of course, the way this story is written, the "object" in question is not so inanimate. What I find truly extraordinary about this story is how the author combines comedy with tragedy. The story is lighthearted, until it is not, and then it is again. Kind of like life...if we're lucky.

A wonderful gift to the K/S community this story is a must-read. The pacing of the story is excellent with just the right mix of storyline and character focus. The characterization of McCoy and Spock is also quite true to the series and not too "mushy" in view of the hurt-comfort aspect of this story. I hope to see much more from this author added to the archive soon.

Thank you for this gift. In the weeks that followed the release of the new Star Trek movie, we have seen many authors grapple with new characters of Kirk and Spock, however, in my opinion, no one has done so as effectively and as well as you have in this story.  Spock Prime (funny how that name has caught on) is portrayed exactly as I think he would be; a wiser more emotionally stable verison of the young Spock.  I love that your Spock Prime has the goal of uniting the new Jim and Spock but does so in a subtle way and not by the "wham-bang, just get it on already" style that I think would be completely contrary to his nature.  As wonderful as I think all your characterization is in this story, your portrayal of this Jim is nothing short of remarkable.   As your Spock Prime remarks, this Jim is more damaged than the Jim we all knew from before and as such, is not the same.  You do a fantastic job of displaying those differences while still keeping the core of the Jim we know intact, waiting for the young Spock.  Similarly, the new Spock is not the same but the potential for the connection with Jim is still there.  I hope that you continue with this story as I am blissfully delighted for each second that I get to experience this superb piece of fiction.

Author's Response:

It's a rare and delightful comment that makes me want to read it multiple times, so - thank you. :)  I'm so happy people are enjoying my interpretations of the characters, and that most are finding their differences plausible and their similarities enjoyable.  I'm trying to walk a fine line between TOS and XI to sort of bring it all together, and comments like yours make me think it's working!  Thank you very much!

What a truly fantastic story.  I love the characterization of an older Kirk who has gained wisdom through his travels but never loses that great spirit for adventure that makes him who he is.   I thought your handling of the Vulcan culture was brilliant and completely lacking in the one-dimentional impression that many authors convey and that you, yourself hint at in this story.  Of course not all Vulcans are as conservative as Sarek, as not all Human cultures follow the same norms and traditions.  It is sad to imagine that it would have taken those two that many years to come to the realization of who they are to one another but I can see how duty and their own unique personal issues could have led to this circumstance.  Learning Home is one of the best stories I have read this year and an honor to the K/S tradition.  Thank you for this gift.

Author's Response:

Thank you for the gift of your comments...they, too, are insightful and make me very happy to see that my own love of things Vulcan and K/S are also loved by others. I really appreciate the feedback!!

Superb writing is nothing less than what I have come to expect from you and this story lives up to your reputation.  Although it is difficult for me to completely buy into the premise of a James Kirk who would willingly have Spock sacrifice his life for Jim's own comfort and solace, I still enjoyed this piece for its quiet truth about what these two men mean to one another and for the great insights from McCoy's point a view.  Thank you for sharing "Should I Fall Behind" with all of us.

Author's Response:

Well, it certainly wasn't for Jim's comfort or solace, but if it reads that way then I totally fail as an author. Which is of course regrettable, but also a great incentive to strive for better. ;-) Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts, it is invaluable input to any author. :)
