This is dark, and a story that drove itself onto the page with great determination. I knew my husband would be mad that I hadn’t gone to the store as I’d intended, but the story would not wait. It’s not my story. It has its own life, and insisted itself into being. It didn’t explain which universe it was from, or whether Jim has blue eyes or brown. I see the original series characters in this, but I leave it to the reader to decide.
In some ways it is humorless because there is no softening of reality. There is the misery of old age, and forgetfulness, and the anger that surely comes with all of that. And yet this IS Jim Kirk. He would find humor in life, even if he can find it only at his own expense. Read this at your own risk. It stops short – just barely – of character death. But Spock is there, so at least, at least Jim has that. If you look hard, there is a tiny bit of fluff and humor – but there is much, much more angst.
Warning – for the final time – don’t read this if you want something light and fluffy.
