I love this story. And, I love your professor. It's not just young people that need to hear that. A lot of "mature" people could have saved themselves a tremendous amount of pain and grief if they had just heard and could have heeded those words.

Before I retired, I was a clinical psychologist, and I saw SO many people who were miserable because they'd given up who they were in order to be loved. And they felt hollow and empty and weren't sure why. But from the outside, the "why" was obvious -- instead of giving their partner their LOVE, they'd given their partner their SELF. And that doesn't work; people need to have a self! It was really their fault, though, because stories and movies tend to paint it as romantic to "give up everything for love." No! It's not romantic; it's suicide. But nobody tells people that, except for my professor. And me. :-)
In any case, I think Spock's Vulcan identity is important enough to him that it would never even occur to him to give it up for love (not that Kirk would ever ask him to) ... just one more way that Spock is awesome. :-)
