Brilliant piece and a good thought regarding Jim Kirk. The idea that he has not yet personalised his feelings but understood Spock's inner mind was a genius concept and it was well contained in this fic.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much; I'm really happy that you enjoyed the story.

I take the view its control not repression, but i loved your story

Author's Response:

I'm glad you enjoyed the story!

The word I used is "restrain," which could mean either control OR repression.  I think of it more as control than repression, myself, but in either case, I think it does have a cost.

Great little story! I love Jim's discretion, his respect for his friend's privacy and how he found a way to let Bones know without giving away anything. I'm left with wondering why "Kirk smiled sadly"...

Author's Response:

I'm glad you enjoyed the story!  Thanks so much for leaving a review.

I had Kirk smile sadly because I thought he would feel sad for two different reasons:

1.  His dear friend has such strong feelings, but Jim will only ever get to see them in a meld, and he'd love to be able to see them on Spock's face or hear them in Spock's voice, so he's sad for his own sake, for what he now knows is there but will never see.

2.  Restraining such strong feelings costs Spock a lot -- costs all Vulcans a lot -- and Kirk is sad for Vulcans in general and for Spock in particular, that the experience of past generations has taught them that their emotions are too strong to be allowed to run loose, that they must devote so much energy to controlling them.
