I liked this story a lot until they sent him to an inpatient facility.  I don't think in true canon that either Spock or McCoy wld ever agree that Kirk wld heal better away from them. It just didn't sit well with me espec since Jim was mostly sufferring frome being away from Spock and then you send him off for even longer?  Sorry, you wrote a good story I just personally felt that whole inpatient thing cld have been omitted.

Author's Response:

Thanks for your feedback. I very much appreciate you taking the time to give constructive criticism. I definitely think there were problems in this story with how I portrayed Jim's experience. I wanted to be as accurate as possible, and a trauma of this kind would definitely require inpatient treatment (in our century at least, lol). In my understanding of the trio's characters, they would do just about anything for each other, even if it's painful. I felt that both Bones and Spock would see that they had fucked up trying treat Jim on the ship, and go through with handing him over to more competent specialists even if it felt unbearable. So I don't neccessarily agree that they were OOC. One of the messages I wanted to get across was that even a love like Jim and Spock's can't heal everything, but that a love like theirs can survive mental illness if it's handled right. And sometimes that means being apart for a while. But it is very, very likely that I didn't convey that message sucessfully.

I think this whole inpatient section was problematic, and a bit of a lazy device on my part to avoid going into detail about how Jim got from so traumatized he couldn't function to being cleared for duty. So I appreciate your drawing my eye a little closer to this problem.

Sorry about the novel-length and very late response! I do appreciate your feedback and your time. Thanks!

Beautiful, well told fic, dramatic, sad and sweet at the same time, a story about the many challenges that are sometimes hidden even in happy turnings of events like finding alife your husband whom you thought dead. A story about the power of love that in the end is victorious over all the confusion and dark threats, a story also about the very power of intensly happy moments that become havens to our troubled minds. A fine Christmas Story, thank you.

An intense but wonderful tale. Thankyou. I love the consistent imagery of the snowy landscape as a place of togetherness for the boys.
