If this story is unfinished, it should be in the Works in Progress category.

Very well done.  It is always nice to see something new about interesting characters.  Especially when originally Aurelan and Sam are dead in the original series.  So kudos to you to flesh out their personas it is a fascinating read.  Looking forward to the next chapter...

Author's Response:

Thanks. Its been a lot of fun wrting these characters since Sam was dead before Kirk got to Denava and Aurelan was only alive for a scene or so. I originally wasn't going to put Aurelan in it and just use Sam but then I decided 'what the hell' and wrote her in. She adds more conflict to Sam's sordid life and Jim's angst. Thanks for you review. I'm working on the next chapter but its become a slow process.

Well, you asked for feedback, honey...

Roman Catholic?!?! Have you ever heard the phrase "write what you know"? You clearly know way more about traditional Japanese weddings than you know about Catholicism. The RCC wedding ceremony is a MASS which is held to bless the wedding. In the US, religious leaders are allowed the same powers as a justice of the peace or clerk of the court and may ALSO officiate a marriage. (The license is issued by the state.) Thus, in the US, an RCC priest, or celebrant, would hold the mass and also include the wedding ceremony, as well as blessing the union. (Wedding masses are held for the purpose of blessing the union, at least that was the original intention, as marriages were originally a secular affair. Today, however, according to the official catechism, marriage is a sacrament. Take that FWIW.)

I have no problem with Chekov being Catholic (granted, Russians are part of the Eastern Orthodox Church, but there's no reason to suppose that his family might not have changed religions). I could even buy the RCC accepting same sex marriages (though it's unlikely--the RCC has a two-thousand year history of stigmatizing homosexual behavior). But to marry a Catholic to a non-Christian? RCC's are somewhat ... parochial about such things. (OTOH, there are no children in the picture--the religious education of children is their biggest concern with regards to "mixed" marriages.) Now, I know some RCC's who married non-RCC's in a Catholic wedding, but that didn't come without several months of mandated pre-marriage counseling. The RCC is not required to marry anyone, and can and does refuse to marry people all the time.

Okay, so that's probably more info than you needed, but seriously? Do a little wiki search before you commit to something this silly, okay? If you'd have said Anglican instead of Catholic I wouldn't have batted an eyelash. (Although even so, it wouldn't be Kirk performing the marriage ceremony, now would it?)

Author's Response:

Thanks for your feedback and your right, I did ask for it! As for your complaints... I probably didn't do enough research with the subject but I wanted an internal conflict to make the story a little bit more interesting and I played around with alot of different religions before finally deciding on this one. I'm sorry if I insulted you, it really wasn't intentional. But we are talking about futuristic events and I am hoping that homosexual marriages will one day be excepted by everyone. And not everyone who lives in Russia is Eastern Orthodox. Theres a huge majority but if what your saying is true then all the people living in Utah must be Mormons. And that's not true! But to clear up one little fact. Jim was specifically asked to do their wedding because he's both Sulu's and Chekov's good friend but Sulu was forced by his mother to have it at a shinto shrine. So he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Since they saved the world and all, Starfleet allowed Jim to perform the marriage even though it wasn't on his ship.

Oooooo. A part 2? I'm looking forward to it. It's interesting to see what happened to Sam. *Bops Jim* You should've noticed Spock.

Author's Response:

Don't you wish you could do that in real life! XD Thanks for the review!

Good start.  But, not to split hairs, but I'm pretty sure that ships' captains are only allowed to perform marriage aboard their vessles.  Kirk wouldn't have the authority to perform a marriage off the ship (even for his crewmembers) unless he were specifically ordained.

(Not that there aren't a hundred ways for anyone to get ordained to perform a marriage.)

Author's Response:

Usually thats the case but Jim was specifically asked to do their wedding because he's both Sulu's and Chekov's good friend but Sulu was forced by his mother to have it at a shinto shrine. So essentially he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Since they saved earth and all, Starfleet allowed Jim to perform the marriage even though it wasn't on his ship. Thanks for your review!
