Kirk brings back an unpleasant souvenir from an away mission.

Spock was alone on a preindustrial planet during hostile weather conditions, and he had no food, no shelter, inadequate clothing, and no means to acquire any of these things.  He certainly had no money to buy a street urchin's matches.

What if the Eugenics Wars were actually the Mutant Revolution of X-Men: The Last Stand?  What if the human governments had forced the mutant "cure" upon the global population, effectively silencing the X-gene?

Earth of the 23rd Century:  After being supposedly irrevocably suppressed back in the 21st Century, the X-gene has started reappearing, with isolated cases popping up all over the place.  A school is built in the middle of nowhere, in the rugged Australian outback – a school for these new “mutants”, Homo superior, far from civilisation to protect innocent bystanders from getting hurt by adolescents that aren’t quite in control of their powers yet.
