While I have mixed feelings about the artwork that helped inspired this story, it's not one of my favourites of Gayle's work, your use of the costumes in this context and as part of the story as a whole, was simply superb.  The story had a sense of the mystical from beginning to end, and was extremely enjoyable. Simply wonderful!

A wonderfully written story.  The depth and detail of the crafting, this could almost be a universe all of it's own, without needing to be referenced as a ST AU.  There are the bits of characterisation here and there, and universe history, that makes you look and say "Yes, that's what the future could have been if things had gone wrong when Earth first took to the stars."  The build up and development of Kirk and Spock's relationship feels very organic and unrushed, making the point they're at by the end of the story feel like a very natural place for them to be.

At first I found the switch to first-person-perspective for Daniel's sections to be somewhat jarring, however after finishing the story I can see where the stylistic choice ultimately worked.  It set him apart from Kirk and Spock, even though he was on the journey along with them, but instead of sharing with them he was an outsider looking in.

I also really like how the story ended, just enough wrapped up, bringing them to the next turning point in their lives.  Of course with as open as the ending is it does leave me wishing for more, to know how their revolution goes, to know if Daniel ever finds the peace he lost.  I'd like to think that they succeed and are free to live the rest of their lives among the stars, and that Daniel finds his peace some day, even if it isn't with a partner at his side.

So, ultimately, this babbling all boils down to: Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of art with us!

Author's Response:

A very belated “thank you” for your comments – much appreciated!  I particularly appreciate your comment on the pacing of the development of their relationship because they both had a lot of ground to cover before they were truly right for each other.

When I began writing Daniel’s portion, he began “speaking” to me in the first person, and I quickly decided that, unconventional choice or not, I needed to tell his portion of the story in that manner to emphasize his isolation from both Kirk and Spock, as well as his sister and others in the community.

I would love to write a sequel one of these days – I just haven’t had the time.  But in the portion in my head, they do succeed, and Daniel does find some measure of peace in his life.

The Vulcan Who Fell to Earth by CMM Rated: ADULT (NC-17) starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 258]
Summary:

All done!

This is in answer Skutch's An Alien on Earth challenge, which goes like this:

In the 21st century when Earth people are not yet aware of life on other planets, a Vulcan who was sent to study Earth is forced to land because his ship is damaged. He speaks English because Vulcan has been studying Earth for quite some time now. The ship is damaged beyond repair so he manages to destroy it completely (wouldn't want people finding alien spaceships lying around) before he faints. The Vulcan is found by a 18 year old boy who takes him to his apartment (have fun coming up with how he manages to do that). The Vulcan wakes up soon and the boy wants to take a look at his wounds. He is too weak to resist and he fails to push the boy away before he removes his shirt and sees wounds covered with green blood.

I don't want him to accept the fact that the man is an alien too quickly, after all it really would be quite shocking, so please take your time with the story. Feel free to continue any way you think would be best, perhaps change the beginning of the story too, if you'd like.
I'd like to see a strange sort of friendship first evolve slowly, James trying to teach Spock about his culture, Spock having a very hard time understanding certain concepts, Spock finding himself telling James things he should not be telling a human, protecting him from people who cause him harm, etc.

This will probably be a very long fic, and I'm not sure where it's going or who else I'm going to bring in, but....

A couple of points for the sake of clarity:

1. Spock's full Vulcan, not a half-breed (This is AU; I can do tht).

2. Spock does have emotions. His people are strong and stoic, but not particularly repressed. So he may actually smile once in awhile.

This is an excellent story, you've done a wonderful job so far.  I've wondered sometimes why there aren't more stories dealing with Spock's aftermath to the tragedy in the movies. Vulcans are excellent at repressing emotion, but repression doesn't always work, and it certainly isn't always healthy.

As someone whom has seen/delt with various aspects and consiquences of depression over the past couple of decades, I'm really appreciating the very genuine depiction of what Spock's going through, and how those around him are responding.  You've got it all spot on, and I'm loving Jim, McCoy, and even Scotty and Uhura, all the more for their practical and spot on reactions and plans for assisting him in getting through it.

I greatly look forward to the rest of this story.

Author's Response: It's kind of intimidating to muck around in such a deep pit of angst with such an emotionally unavailable character. I've taken some extreme liberties with Spock here, but I suppose I can feel justified since he almost strangled Kirk in the movie and took some really cheap shots a few times. In a lot of ways, the Abrams/Quinto version has more depth than the Roddenberry/Nimoy version. Don't get me wrong, I love TOS Spock, but I think that if this had happened to him, he would have either shattered, gone out of character, or become very unsympathetic as a character. The additional depth of NU!Spock makes drama a little easier to work with imo.

Thanks for your comments!

Very nicely done. While Spock clearly has a ways to go, he's turned a hopeful corner and I think you ended the story with just that right hint of the hope for the future without feeling the need to tie everything up with a bow.

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm kind of a fan of loose endings :-)

I finished reading this last night and was remiss in not leaving a note when I did.  I absolutely adored this piece.  As I am coming to see, you have a wondeful talent for producing a story with just the right balance of angst and hope to keep a reader engaged and invested in the characters.  My heart with going out to Kirk (and McCoy) every moment that he feared Spock would not survive. Simply wonderful!

Summary:

A continuation of the story begun with Comfort Food, though this one stands alone.

McCoy notices some abnormalities in Spock's vital signs and requests that the ship's course be diverted to the new Vulcan colony so that he can consult with a Vulcan physician, so the Enterprise goes to New Vulcan, which turns out to be nothing at all like the Vulcan Spock remembers.

K/S in later chapters. McCoy/OC; Sarek/OC.

As you know, I really enjoyed the characterizations you portrayed in Comfort Food, so I was really pleased when I saw this up, and even more so when I realised you'd posted chapter 3 while I was reading the first chapter.  Again I am greatly enjoying the characterizations and story here.  You manage to draw out a variety of emotions which is always a welcome find in an author.  The scene with which you finished chapter 3 is priceless! I felt compassion for both Serek and Spock in how they must feel in that situation, and at the same time a sense of amusement at the manner in which Spock twists Serek's words and tosses them back at him (though I think his twisting is quiet accurate, just completely non-diplomatic).  I really feel a parent/child dynamic there.  Can't wait to read more. :)

Author's Response: Thank you! I've found a perverse pleasure in writing Sarek/Spock scenes. It's fun to play with that dynamic. I'm glad you're enjoying!

Oh my... That was quite the chapter!  I'm glad to see that Spock and T'Beith aren't going to go any further with the pursuit of a bond (though I can't at all blame her for considering any way to get away from her father, what an arse!).  I truly love the emotional intensity you infuse the story with, it makes it quite easy to get lost inside the characters' thoughts and desires.

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying. I'm always worried about whether my writing is entertaining. I love to root around in the characters' heads, but I know those stories aren't as exciting as they could be if I'd focus more on plot, so I'm always glad to hear when people enjoy that approach

You left it there?! You are a mean, creul (awesome) author! *pouts* I thought I was feeling impatient waiting for this chapter, it's not going to hold a candle to waiting for the next one.

Also, I'm starting to feel more and more for poor T'Beith. I still don't want her mated with Spock, but I am wishing McCoy would find out about the obviously terrible situation the poor woman's in.  He clearly seems to carry quite a bit of affection for her.

Damn you and your excellent characterizations! ;)

YAY! I'm glad you updated so soon. :)  Also, I loved this chapter.  I was a little worried from Serek's previous reminicing about he and Amanda that Spock would spend the whole time out of his head, but it looks like he and Jim have things sorted out so that he won't.  I've read stories with a number of variations on Pon Farr, from it being what amounts to fabulous sexcapades to uncontrolled animalistic rutting.  Your version falls into the category I like the best, something that's in the middle of that spectrum.  It has it's fabulous moments, and it's unpleasant ones as well, but ultimately it's something Jim and Spock can get through together and (hopefully) bring them closer in the end.

Simply wonderful. :)

Author's Response: Thank you! Exactly the balance I was looking for. Thanks for your comments!

No apologies were needed, life happens.  Another excellently written, and highly emotive chapter was more than reward enough for the waiting.

Author's Response: I don't usually post WIPs for that very reason, but when I started posting, I had nearly half the story written. Previous delays were because I didn't want to let go of a chapter until the next one was finished to maintain some of that buffer, or (in the case of one chapter) because I was waffling over what to do with a particular scene that was important later on. I just hate letting it linger out there because I haven't written the next chapter yet. Thanks for your comments!

I'm plesantly surprised with how soon this update came. :)  It's been a very interesting chapter, some of my suspicions about T'Bieth's situation proved true, though it proved even more complicated than I had expected, the poor woman.  I hope McCoy is able to get through to her.  It was certainly an emotional rollercoaster of a chapter, and well written as usual!

Author's Response: Yeah, I was off for a week so I had time to work on it some. On the one hand, I hate that I'm stringing this out for so long-- I don't normally post WIPs for this exact reason. On the other hand, knowing I have an unfinished story is a motivation to keep writing it ;) Thanks for your comments

Poor Jim!  I made the same mistake he did, but I suppose i should have guessed from the chapter title something like that might happen.  His courage and fortitude through it all, how he manages to take it in stride even when he's laying in a hospital bed, is one of the traits I so love about him.  He, like so many of the other characters in this story, all feel so very in character and real, I'm truly in awe of your skill.  I'm also really enjoying the dynamic between Sarek and Jim, I don't see any in-law-quarels there in the future. :)

Author's Response: Thank you! I consider it a great compliment that you find the characters real and true to nature.
