Orion raiders fire on a shuttle carrying Spock and Uhura, which crashes on an unexplored planet. This ends up being Uhura's first command...
Re-reading this as well--thanks for doing a then-Uhura story, I'm partial to TOS--and I do like the warm, loyal, restrained-jungle-panther Uhura--she had *presence*.

TWOK blew my mind right the fuck outta the water the first time I saw it. After all those years feeling like Spock in my head, watching him die was *extremely* weird. I hated that he was gone, but at the same time, didn't want them to bring him back. He died an honourable death. Helluva lot better than what Berman did to JTK in Generations.

Did I hear someone say *addictive* ?? I started this story less than 24hr ago but had to work and sadly also to sleep as I was working morning shift (I did cheat and got up around 3AM and gobbled a couple chapters)....From the first punch in the gut and utter coldness thropugh disbelief, sadness, joy, adventure, suspence, hope, love, anger, relief--gamut of emotions, gamut of nuances of emotions...and even Little Red Riding Hood coming out of the woods.

Almost a year has passed since Jim first found Spock alive and both escaped from slavery. Life in the Fringeworlds is sometimes hard, but they're *free.* But now the race who first enslaved them has applied for membership in the Federation, and both men realize -- although they don't want to do it, they have to go back to Earth. They cannot stand by and watch the slavers be Admitted.

I could FEEL McCoy's happiness--and oc I could see the place cos I'm from there (so I guess that was cheating;)--wanted to kick the sf guys*madface*--and recognized the blond biotch already last time and felt intelligent but I guess that's owing to your writing--also the really incredible flight near-crash, so techie--geez are you RAF or something?

Nope, not official military at all -- but a lifelong tech-geek and skeptical reader of military stuff, so I can fake it pretty good!! Very glad the locale descriptions seemed right -- have never been there yet, so was doing the best guess I could. Glad the villain works for ye too!!
Their reunion scene was difficult to do at first; it's one of the bits Killa helped me polish, bless her heart. All praise to beta-readers, for we'd be aye lost without them!
arrggh I am wishing some deadly sloughing fulminating fungal infection on the Ochin' and their ilk (world is full of)
the unfairness of Kirk's nonconsensual back-monkey, and all the harms to Spock (and the aphasia--been there)--our two Best thus brought low*growling-and-gnashing-teeth*
