I am going to archive my stories and poems here which have previously been published in print zines (after the common waiting period of 1 year after publication). These works are also archived at AO3, where you will find my filk recordings, too, and my works in other fandoms.

Blanket statement: You do not need to ask my permission to remix, podfic, translate, create art for or create any secondary fanwork of any fanwork I have published in zines or posted online (including my vids), as long as you treat my work respectfully, credit me by name, link back to my work, and share the link to your work with me. Summary:

It’s a question of biology. Vulcan biology.

The problem with falling in love with a member of an insanely private species is that it just might take you the best part of a five year mission to work out that the feelings are requited. And then you might discover that he’s already decided that the two of you can never be together.

And what are you supposed to do if he won’t tell you why?

~*~

Written as a response to T'Lara’s ingenious challenge, which is noted when it shows up in-text. Huge thanks to my fantastic betas Frodolass, penguin_attie and miloowen for being, well, fantastic. Any mistakes that remain are all mine.

If you'd like to download a PDF copy of the full novel (minus the author notes but including the translations from Vulcan), click here.

Also, the talented veta_black has created a fanmix for the fic, which you can access here.

Ah, it hurts so well! What a gripping chapter with perfect world building and empathetic treatment of characters. These last two lines brought tears to my eyes. There are many fics out there that throw around the word "t'hy'la" in an almost careless way, so that I sometimes fear this holiest part of K/S vocabulary has become a cliché. But it's scenes like this, so perfectly executed, big drama on silken paws, that rehabilitate the use of "t'hy'la".

Also, "Jim" - this word that breaks the fearful tension in ST III and rightens the world again - here, it sums up the whole conflict in one syllable, reifies forsaken desire, haunting memory, overwhelming spell.

Powerful, my dear, powerful!

Author's Response:

YAAAAAAY T'LARA REVIEW WOOOOO!! *throws confetti and happydances*

You know, I wasn't going to drop the t-bomb in this fic, I really wasn't, for exactly that reason: I love it, I adore it, I adore that this is how they feel about each other, and I adore that Roddenberry created this word specifically for us, but I do worry about over-using it (says the woman who used with in the sappiest of sappy sapness in her advent fic. But is okay, because I spelt it the Vulcan way there *g*). It was just that I got about halfway through the chapter and I suddenly realised that it felt like it belonged here. And we know it's on his mind with regards to Jim at Gol, because he goes there pretty damn quick on the morning of kolinahr, and also that it's a word that he has trouble allowing himself to articulate in regards to Jim. (And, I can't help but think, the fact that it's *Spock* and not Jim who comes across the "lovers rumour" after V'Ger, is a gentle suggestion that our favourite Vulcan knows *exactly* what the word mostly neatly connotes....)

Thank you so much! This is your fic, my dear, and I'm so very, very pleased that you liked this!

So good to see a Kirk-Bones scene! Love it!

Spock's request for temporary leave makes me uneasy, but I have utmost trust in you that there is indeed a method to this. I figured as much that we wouldn't get an immediate talk with both putting everything out in the open and coming clear, hugging and making up. In fact, this would have been a little rushed. So I'll sit back and eagerly await the next step in this saga. (And if I desperatedly chew my nails in the meantime, I think it is a legitimate way of coping.)

Author's Response:

Yay, TLara! *dances and waves* Yeah, the Kirk-Bones scene was a lot of fun to write. I feel like there were a couple of things he'd been bottling up for a while :-) There is a method, I swear there is. It's totally necessary, and I promise not to drag it out any longer than it needs to be dragged out. I... realize that, after 200,000 words, this not necessarily that reassuring, though...

You spoil us! :-)

I thoroughly enjoyed this chapter: the bits and pieces of Kirk's life, Lori's understanding, memories of his brother, the restless shovelling and trying to be busy. It all seemed so intimate. I feel I really needed this chapter to get to know Kirk better, to get back in touch with this special man, to rediscover him. (And maybe this is what he needed, too.)

Author's Response:

Couldn't agree more about Kirk needing some time to get back in touch with himself. I keep thinking about the start of TMP (especially in the novel, where he basically acknowledges that he's emotionally and psychologically exhausted to the point where he barely knows himself) and how the movie goes ahead and just piles thing after thing after thing on top of a man who's already reeling. He'd never turn his back on duty, but if he can combine duty with getting the hell out of Dodge for a few days, I think he'd be crazy not to go for it. Also, what do you reckon to trying to start up a new (and very fic-specific) meme? Namely: LORI KNOWS :-)

*sings off-key* Haaaaallelujah! Hallelujah! Halle-eee-lu-jaaaaah! *and does a wild happy dance*

Fi-na-lly. I can't wait to see how the "Lava Lube" (and don't I just love this term!! you know what I called the concept in the prompt, but Lava Lube is much more, erm, sublime!) will play out in action.

And you know what? These 200,000 words were necessary, not a word too much. I can't emphasise enough how thoroughly thrilled and honoured I am that my wee prompt inspired a novel of such epic proportions and dramatic depth. <3

Author's Response:

You've never sung an off-key note in your life, my multi-talented friend! Delighted that you liked "Lava Lube" - my chapter notes are frequently irreverent (chapters where Kirk has a bee in his bonnet about something, he becomes Captain Pissy when I'm jotting down plot points, so at times, this whole work has been subtitled in my head with "Being an Account of Captain Pissy and the Lava Lube Issue". And I have been DYING to share that for NEARLY THREE YEARS NOW, because my 11-year-old self cannot be contained.) Well, a fic is only as good as its muse, so all credit where it's due! :-)

This keeps being a delight to read!

The recording is on AO3 now.

Summary:

I'm really not even sure if fucking with iconic poetry is considered filking, but uh...that's kind of what I've done here. LOL.

If Poe wasn't spinning in his grave after The Raven, he sure as hell is now...or perhaps he's applauding and nodding in ghoulish fascination...who knows. All I know is, I'm definitely going to hell for this. I've defiled a beautiful work of creepiness and turned it into porn prose.

There are two reasons this exists:

1) IvyCross linked a 'Who Do Write Like App' on facebook and I copied and pasted one of my non-fandom poems and it gave me Poe as a result.

2) AKO is apparently obssessed with frals, but that's secondary really. She got on my fb and unwittingly, or perhaps wittingly, said 'Do a parody of the 'The Bells'

Also, I'm pretty sure...someway, somehow, this is Fugitive's fault by seven degrees of separation. Just because...

Interesting start! Will definitely keep an eye on this story. Just one thing: Could you label it as "Work in Progress", please? I had expected a complete story, so the sudden announcement that this is a WIP took me by (a not so welcome) surprise.

Author's Response:

Oh no! I know how awful it is to be sucked into a WIP unawares. I have selected incomplete on the box though. If you look at the header of the story it says complete? and next to it says NO. I apologize that it's not more stand out but it is there as well as listed in the warnings/end notes. I am gald you like it so far though.

Within and Without by louiseb Rated: All Audiences starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 66]
Summary:

NOW COMPLETE.

James Kirk is fearless. At least that's his reputation and it's been earned. But standing here, in this chamber of horrors, the captain fears three things - losing his crew, losing his command and losing his first officer. His friend.

Something is very wrong with the colony on Deneb III.

In style of classic TOS with its roots in a classic TOS episode.

Author's Response:

Wow! I made it to T'Lara's favourites list. That's just made my Sunday. And thank you for your kind review. I'm making a deliberate attempt to write a TOS episode here although it may get a little darker than TOS at times.

Still with you. And enjoying this fic immensely - it has everything I want to see in a TOS episode, including the K/S undercurrent. Your writing is really captivating.

As soon as you mentioned the mineral, I had the suspicion that it might be something similar to the Alfa 177 ore. I wonder if the rescued colonists have already caused problems with the transporter and if there are maybe a few split personalities aboard.

Author's Response:

Yup, got to love that undercurrent. It's surely what makes these two so compelling to write as characters. And you called my writing captivating <goes and gives self a little hug of glee>

Glad this is still hitting the TOS sweet spot for you. Not sure I'll be able at keep the playing time to 50 mins though. And am already breaking the broadcasting rules on commercial breaks I suspect.

Still reading (and biting my nails in the process). Damn, you really know how to create tension!

Author's Response:

So glad you're still reading and sorry about the nails. Original draft had revealed more about what's going on by this stage but my muse wouldn't let me write it down. She can be a bit of a bitch sometimes.
