In the Shade follows the lives of James Kirk and Spock of Vulcan after the end of the Enterprise’s five year mission. Spock has still not recovered the psychic powers he lost in Promises to Keep, although he and Kirk visit a Vulcan healer who might hold the key to his recovery. Kirk is promoted to commodore. In the wider world, political power is about to shift in a way unacceptable to some humans, and inevitable turmoil will result.

In the Shade is a very personal novel, an intense, intimate look into the lives of two extraordinary men and the events that threaten to tear them apart.

His sterling reputation as a distinguished and intrepid starship commander was legendary, yet away from the limelight and constant acclaim the personal life of Admiral James T. Kirk seems marked by a powerful and ultimately epic struggle as he becomes inextricably trapped between loyalty and desire.

AU. Albion IV was colonized years ago by Humans and Vulcans who rejected technology. Additionally, the Vulcans rejected the teachings of Surak. Kirk, the young son of a Human landowner, meets Spock, one of the impoverished Vulcans who work the land nearby and discovers a friend and more in the quiet young alien. But Kirk’s hopes and plans for their future must deal with mutual prejudice – and the secret Spock has been keeping for years: his uncle’s ongoing sexual abuse.
