I will start by saying that I am a TOS fan and most familiar with that universe, but I have seen the reboot films although I have only seen the Discovery episode that was on TV.  So there were a few things that confused me a bit, but I think that is b/c of my lack of famliarity with reboot and possibly Discovery.  That said, I found this to be a generally well written and mature story that I look forward to following.  Your story shows a more mature Kirk and Spock than I see at times, and that is my preference.  After all, the boys are driving the biggest ship in the fleet, right?  While my general preference is for stories where Kirk and Spock are not opponents, I can definitely say that I will look forward to reading more of this. Thanks!

Author's Response:

I actually don't know too much about Discovery myself, other than I liked the idea of Michael being a ward/foster child in the family. Thankfully, with Discovery being the Prime universe, I got to decide a different path for Michael with what I did know while still hoping I keep her in character. (I probably won't fold in too much Kelvin!Discovery unless it's a side story; I like keeping things simple in my main work.)

This is such a lovely comment, I'm so glad you think of my Spock & Kirk as mature. I keep in mind that they're quite young in comparison to their Prime counterparts meeting for the first time, but also that means they're working to fill bigger shoes. The sequel, "Lost Harbor", will definitely dive into that. (I'm planning on starting that in April, as I have the whole draft of "Synthesis" complete and it just needs edits & beta reads.)

Also, don't worry, they're not going to be "rivals" for long -- and even then I try to make it apparent they're trying to overcome their prejudice against the other to work together. Part 2 will be a little rough for them, but I think that'll make their budding friendship even more satisfying. (And, well, eventual other aspects to said friendship... ;)

Thank you again for your lovely comment, I hope to continue to please!

I felt like I was reading a novel. Loving it, please update regularly!

Author's Response:

When I embarked on this project, I wanted to engender exactly that -- that you're reading a novel! Don't worry about the updates -- I have an entire first draft already completed, I'm already a good quarter through editing Part 2. :) I hope to have all the parts edited and sent to my betas before April, so I can start working on the second novel for Camp NaNoWriMo, and I can update while I'm working on the sequel.

Thanks so much for your commentary -- I hope to continue to please! :)
