I loved this plot idea!
I also think that some more was needed, for Jim, to make the connection.. at least earlier and prevent the.. parting of the baby in the terms it finally happened. Just my thoughts in the matter. Thanks for sharing!

Haha are you allowed to review your own fic? Probably not but it is worth reflecting. I still think this was a reasonable plot but might have benefited from a little more gender explanation I realise that I should have left the Last bit as I wrote initially when Kirk finds his missing FO (after worrying he has transported off ship) in the mortuary. Scene plays out that Jim has to take the child. He sees who she is he hears his voice of several days ago and understands. Jims feelings are sensed and all changes. Aalin gratified her thoughts have been sorted. Nyota at a loss to understand what Spockwas lesson was.
Mmmh I think it is worth a rewrite

Very interesting take on the subject; however, if Nyota just plain hated the thought of bearing children (and I can relate; I knew when I was 5 years old that I didn't want kids), why didn't get get her tubes tied? Surely they can do that in the 23rd century. And your story seems to imply that because Nyota didn't want kids, she secretly wanted to be a man. I'm not sure that one follows the other.
No she definitely doesn't want to be male, she loves being number one chick. She just has problems getting rid of the stereotype she has in her own head regarding the sex of Starship captains (Not starfleets stereotype I add, her own)
The fic was inspired by the idea of Nyota in TOSMovies as being a career woman. In some fics she is head (Captain/Admiral) in charge of Fleet security arm. I think she is a bit young to make an relatively irrevocable decision regarding sterilisation (given this is set in ST2009 era.
But maybe there is a story behind her choice.(Challenge?)Some fics suggest that Uhura was brought up by a relative. Can't remember what happened to mum but I did consider writing in an unpleasant childhood expereince which had put her off for life. In the end I decided she was just not in to kids, but felt conflicted because of societal obligations (how women are supposed to feel) and her perception of Vulcan society in particular.
On the tubes tied front, most fics take 2011 as a basis. In general Gynaecologists are unwilling to leap to perform such a procedure given that reversal is hard and IVF/Gamete sampling is not straightforward/costly unless the woman has thought it through very carefully. (For this fic purposes Uhura is in denial)
Hope that helps
