The thing I like the most about this poem is the inner doubt that you capture...deep down inside, Roddenberry wanted Kirk to struggle with the decisions that he is forced to make. The crew never sees the inner doubts of their captain -- to them, he is all-capable and forever confident. But Jim is just like everybody else, wondering what course of action to take...
"Should I? Shouldn't I?" I can definitely see him lying awake many a-night pondering this question.
