I forgot to add, in response to #3 (and the statement: "He ends the battle as soon as he can, and is compassionate with his defeated foes"), that even Reboot!Kirk shows that characteristic. After they've clearly defeated the bad guy, he offers to take them as prisoners instead of destroying them and their ship. Considering all that guy had done, that's a pretty magnanimous offer (of which Spock disapproves...).

Thank you for your comments. It's true that Reboot!Kirk is not very different from classic Kirk.

I love you! I would be very interested to see a Reboot version of this essay. It seems as if a lot of new fans (Okay, I'm fairly new, but I am new because of TOS reruns, not because of ST:XI) take these myths and fanon ideas and accept them as established fact. Of course, Reboot!Kirk is a totally different person than TOS!Kirk because of their dissimilar backgrounds, but there are some innate characteristics that people have. The fact that his dad died doesn't mean that his mom was a wreck forever. Seriously, how many people don't deal and move on (at least to some extent) after 25 years? Sure, there's always going to be some sadness, but eventually it's outweighed by good memories and gratefulness for having known the person. I doubt that his mom's personality changed that much after the death of her husband, so he would've gotten a lot of guidance the same from her that TOS!Kirk did.
Anyway, maybe I should write that! I have a lot of pet peeves about the way these characters are treated in some ST:XI fics. New fans and ST:XI writers should be required to read this essay!

Thank you so much.
Fans who just discovered K/S via the new Star Trek movie MUST acquaint themselves with the classic TOS Kirk/Spock - even if they care nothing for classic K/S fanfic.
