I love the idea of Spock being totally non secretive and McCoy thinking he will get a heart to heart with Kirk but they make it clear that duty comes first.

You are a good writer and I enjoyed the story. However, I cannot underatand how McCoy can constantly be preceived as being so nasty and irritating. His friendship for and understanding of Spock is clearly seen in TOS through his gruffness. Any doctor who behaved as McCoy is so often (exophobic) protrayed woiuld never have been allowed to graduate from any military academy, much less Starfleet.
